Somewhere in my 20 years of school, someone taught me that Queen Victoria was responsible for this divergence of the language into two forms. In America, we are still profoundly affected by our Puritan forbearers, and yet vulgar usage is ubiquitous. We seem to be a society afflicted with MPD.
