Because the forum is open for NTs, too?

(Speaking of which, do NTs need their own sub-forum? <- joke, joke!)

If you think that women deserve a woman-only accessible forum, then men deserve their men-only accessible too.

Yes, but there isn't a specific male forum, so it's not an issue.

To be honest, I usually dislike this sort of segregation. Having a female forum on a message board only makes it seem that the males are the norm and women are the other (or that males are "neutral" and "regular" while women are not).

However, on an Aspie forum, I kind of understand the point. There are more male Aspies than the female ones, and the way the syndrome manifests itself is different for males and females so it makes sense (just like a specific forum for dads - but not moms - would make sense in a message board dedicated to pregnancy).

I read somewhere here that the gender ratio on WP is nearly 1:1, don't ask me how this is even possible.

we only have access to polls, not any solid data from the membership. so at this point we have only the ratios of diagnosed aspie males compared to females to consider. i think it would be extremely useful to have solid statistics on gender on WP.

This is interesting. Does it mean there's an equal number of diagnosed males and females? I wonder why it's different than the general Asperger's and autism statistics.

The only thing I can think of is that the equal number of males and females with Asperger's is interested in participating in this forum.

no, what i'm saying is that we don't know how many males and females participate in the forum. it could be equal, it could be more males, could be more females.

I see.

But seriously, from what I can tell, there seems to be a lot of females here. Almost 50%-50%, though I can't be sure.

I wonder if female Aspies have a general tendency towards socialization, even via internet, due to social gender programming? Hence an evening of the ratio of participating forum users.

some findings from looking at the list of members (not exact as i looked at a approximate ranges):

14 out of the top 50 posters are female, and 34 out of the top 100 (with 6530+ posts)

for members with about 2500 posts, i counted 21 of 50 members being female.

for members with about 1000 posts, i counted 20 of 50 members being female.

for members with about 500 posts, i counted 21 of 50 members being female.

for members with about 100 posts, i counted 20 of 50 members being female.

for members with about 50 posts, i counted 23 of 50 members being female.

for members with about 25 posts, i counted 26 of 50 members being female.

for members with about 10 posts, i counted 16 of 50 members being female.

.... basically it's really difficult to estimate. maybe women are close to half the membership? i have too much time on my hands.

It's closer to 1/3 females, 2/3 males, then.

Is this an old thing, where you think a group of 10 people has 50% females if there are only 2-3 girls in the group? I hope not. It's a sexist view.

Maybe it's just me and my interaction with WP members. It sure seems I "know" an equal number of men and women here.

EDIT: Also, let's not forget that not all these people are diagnosed Aspies. NTs post here, too, and their gender ratio is more even.

I would suppose that from NT#s there are probally more females than males. because its usually the job of a mother to deal with her childs asperger and the job of a wife to deal with her husbands asperger...

Indeed. That's what I thought, too.

family members of aspies and auties did account for a solid 10 to 15% of the females in each set

Hmmm... Given all the info, I think we might be getting closer to the estimated 4:1 male:female ratio for Asperger's. (Or is it just for Autism? Or both?), than it seems at a first glance.
