Thanks, it's a great step forward. Very grateful to the person also who posted how to mute the whiteness. I am adapting to the new format. Well done :)

I'm glad that the upgrade went well and I appreciate the efforts of everyone who made it happen, but honestly, it is too bright and this should not be any kind of news to Alex or anyone involved, because that's exactly what the members said when he first asked for feedback nearly a year ago as well as when he posted the preview a month ago.

True although we also had a ton of complaints about the old colors being too bright as well. So I don't know if it's just that people need to get used to it or if it's going to need to be toned down. Haven't determined this yet.

Interesting. I don't visit that subforum so I never saw those threads. I didn't realize it was known so far in advance what the colors were going to be and that there so many complaints about it already. How many complaints does it take before this gets taken seriously?

I won't be able to get used to this. It's not a matter of disliking change. This is quite literally painful to look at. Not just the white, the pale blue is also way too bright. I feel like I'm getting snowblind.

Can we please have less blank space between lines of non editable text, it makes me have to scroll down a lot more than the old site particularly in the post creation page.

I also agree the background color is too bright.

I had no idea people complained about the old site being too bright, but if that's the case then I really struggle to see the logic behind making the new site even brighter. If some people also complained about the site being too dark it might be more understandable, but I've never seen anyone post that.

Have you tried the link in my signature? It's a long way from a complete fix, but might be helpful as a temporary workaround while the site is fixed properly for everyone.

Thanks, but I use IE. I've tried both Firefox and Chrome and never liked either of them as much as IE. I'm going to try experimenting with Firefox though to see if I can use it just for this site.

If you're going to try a new browser, I'd suggest Chrome over Firefox, but either one should work.

Good point. I've just updated the custom style to make the blue in the navigation menu and the WP logo a little darker.

What I dislike most about Chrome and Firefox is when I zoom the text size, it really screws up the layout of most websites. I can zoom up to 150% in IE and most sites still look fairly normal. But in Chrome especially things really go askew when I zoom.

I'm really not liking the idea of having to learn a new browser and/or use special color settings, just to make this one website more tolerable.

For me it's not just the brightness...it's the way things are spaced out more, no columns or structure, buttons in weird places (I keep hitting the new topic button instead of reply) and having to scroll much more than I used to.

Some people complain it's not high contrast enough. Some people complain the opposite.

Thank you for the new site. The thing that makes me happy is that I've found a way to bring back the blue and green by putting the Stylish app on my toolbar. I was almost ready to change my avatar to Peahawk until I found the Stylish add-on. I do like the modern look better than the old look, though. It's a lot less clunky. :)

Well, you've got to do whatever works best for the majority of people on WP and it's got to be difficult figuring that out. Speaking for myself, though, if it was not for the Stylish addon and Firefox's DOM and Style Inspector (to look for the bits of CSS to change with Stylish) I would not be able to participate on WP anymore.

FWIW...

The old forum colors (alternating blue and green), were miserable to read on the mobile. I actually had to turn off the power saving mode on the mobile to light up that background enough to read it.

I'm an artist and designer, so that have been me being ultra picky readability wise.

This update is okay by me.

I think the new setup is great - thanks Alex for all the hard work to get it up and running. :D

Only two questions:

- will custom skins be a future feature? I have Irlen Syndrome as well so the white background is a bit bright for me.

- are the custom ranks gone for those that had them or will they be coming back in the future?

Thx!

custom skins certainly could be enabled without too much trouble but that is not high on the priority list. if someone wants to create a phpbb3 theme that looks great and send it to me, maybe I would be able to add that sooner but I can't promise how long that would take.

Custom ranks will be added back.
