An "International" sub-forum for people not residing in the US. A place for international news, issues and cultural exchange.

Oh for sure. Sometimes there are cultural issues that aren't necessarily in the news though.

I would like to have a feature that will block certain users from being able to see my posts. I don't want to ignore them, I just want them to ignore me.

It's not just because I want to blither on about Canadian politics. I get it, no one is interested. (Who do you support in the Cnd. fed. election?,) but it would give participants a thread where they could exchange political minutia and learn about other cultures.

It has probably already been suggested but there are 36 pages to wade through to discover if it has. Yes, I have focus and quite some degree of determination but that is actually too much for me. So, here it goes:

My suggestion would be to have some "thumbs up" and "thumbs down" feature. This way you can tell the poster that you liked or disliked what (s)he wrote. Many people just read the threads but don't respond to it, like I "occasionally" do. Sometimes I like what I read and sometimes I don't but I don't have anything else to add to the thread. I may however feel the need to show how much I like the post. That's something that's lacking on this website.

The problem with this is that people will just thumbs-down the posts of people they don't like. Suppose a nice member is disliked by a number of people on here, because those particular individuals are nasty or trollish users. If they were upset, the last thing they would want is to reach out is to get loads of thumbs-down's from those people when they reach out for help and support. I was a poster on another forum and a lot of people disliked me, saying I was annoying and branding me an attention w---e, and a lot of people started fights with me and they made it look like I was the one starting all the fighting, to turn everyone against me. And I never did anything wrong, it was bullying. If that forum had a thumbs-down feature, goodness knows how many thumbs-down's my posts would have gotten.

Put users' gender in handles. It's kinda frustrating not know whether to call my friends "he" or "she".

^ Yes, that's much needed. The old WP (pre-November 2014) made the gender of members clear in the viewing profile.

Another one: Delete trollish threads, threads that serve no purpose etc. instead of locking them. The place is just clogging up with locked threads.

A feature where you can search individual threads might be useful.

a thread auto-lock to prevent bumping old threads.

if a thread has no new posts after a certain amount of time, like a month, the thread becomes automatically locked.
another forum i used to visit used this system. it seemed to work well for them.

however, important "sticky" threads would always stay open unless manually locked.

My list:

1. Add gender options back with the option of hiding said gender to the public.

2. Make a male section that allows men to complain about women any way they want and only allow males to see and post in it, same with the women's thread, only allow women to view and post there. This would eliminate a lot of useless and counterproductive arguments that pop up and make people want to leave the site-- men and women get their place own place to complain about the other gender without it derailing legitimate threads.

3. Eliminate the "similar topics" thread at the bottom of each thread-- it's almost all necrothreads with conversations long forgotten and members long gone.

4. Do not add a thumbs up and thumbs down popularity meter on posts like some people have suggested-- this stifles speech by manipulating people to conform to group think. Perhaps a "kudos" button that notifies the poster that another member likes their post would suffice for that-- people could get the self esteem boost they're looking for without having to manipulate lurkers and posters.

Side note: The site has undergone some major changes the last year, obviously some users were displeased and left, others stayed but are upset by functionality issues while the bugs are worked out. To those programming, which hell, may just be Alex, don't let it get you down because it's a normal process and I appreciate the work that's been put into the site to keep it up to date and relevant. I volunteer my services (Java and the common LAMPP stack-- PHP, CSS, Javascript, HTML5, MySQL)-- I know public sites like this try to keep the coding to a few dedicated and trusted people, but if the programmers are ever in need of those skills contact me and I'll find a way to build that trust. Again, thanks for the work that's been put in so far.

But that would stop people (like me) who like to read old threads from being able to find them as easily. The necrobumping thing wouldn't be a problem if AdamAutistic's suggestion was implemented.

Yes, I agree.

I've posted on other forums and I think feedback system would work really well here, especially considering how hard it is for us to read between the lines and how messed up our perceptions of ourselves. If somebody likes your post or whatever most people aren't just going to respond just to say that and I think it would provide a lot of positive reinforcement. That would probably require a complete change in forum software and I know that aint happening so whatever I guess, there just are forums out there with much better more interactive features.

A way to go directly from one sub-forum to another.

When you're reading in a topic, that already exists. On the bottom of the page, right above the box saying "Similar Topics" there is a box with the name of the forum you're currently in. Click on it, scroll to the sub-forum you want and click on it.
