Since the error message mentions too many connections, I'd guess that the site runs smoother with fewer users accessing it. People posting & visiting less will cause the site to perform better for the active users who chose to stick around. However as the site performs better some users will become more active again & then the site will have more problems till more active users become less active.

Problem is mysql connections are also needed for search engine crawlers and other no-value bots and lookie-loos. Real users’ activity can go down but costs (dollars and resources) can go up. And those are just passive parasites, not active bad guys. So, running a website is a deceptively Hard Thing.

Is the issue fixed or it just went away on its own? I am weary of issues that “resolve themselves”.

I am still getting some occasional slowness and freezes when loading threads and posting replys.

It was fixed. As stated, it was a timeout that needed a (further) tweak - the SQL error generated was a knock-on effect and nothing to do with the number of users.

For a while I was getting a much reduced 2 or 3 errors a day but now I've not seen any for well over a week.

Really? That's odd.
I've not seen anything since before mid July - see my last post here, above.

Are you quite sure it wasn't an unrelated timeout error message directly from CloudFlare?
Those do occur very rarely, usually due to conditions outside WP's control.

Incorrect string value: '\xF0\x9F\x98\x81\x0A\x0A...' for column 'post_text' at row 1 [1366]

Going back and forward isn't helping today.
Same error repeatedly despite altering attempted post.

Take 8
This seems the only section I can post to.
Including after device reboot and browser flush

 I just posted to those two threads without error and going by the lack of reports, so did everyone else.
Can you post the actual URL you used? Sorry, you just did that.

Are you including a Unicode character? Some aren't handled well in posts.
Have you changed or added any add-ons to your browser recently?

No unicode
Two or three lines of text, two ending in smilies

I think it's the smilies.
I've had this error several times previously, ALWAYS with a smiley.

Well yes - the byte sequence \xF0\x9F\x98\x81 refers to the Unicode emoticon "Grinning face with smiling eyes".

But WP doesn't provide Unicode emoticons, only small gifs, so it has to be something you're introducing from an external source.

I just tried to post that character and got the same SQL error.
The post will preview but not submit.

So... best to avoid Unicode characters in posts.

Didn't realise they injected a unicode escape.
I thought I snatched glimpses of  but that could have been another site.
So how can they work only sometimes?
Is it positional?
