This. Most sites will have a notice when they're under maintenance.

This isn't actual maintenance being performed by the one and only admin/developer. Far as I know it's been years since he did any real maintenance or updates.

Hmm I would think then that it'd be easier for the admin to pass it on to someone else if he is no longer in any form interested. Other sites do that, admin wants to move on so they pass it along.

It went down at 11;50pm Eastern time & was still down when I took a nap about 6 hours later. It was working when I got up a few hours ago but I was wondering how long the outage lasted. I thought maybe it had come back rite after I started my nap but I guess not.

Alex knows that I'm sure. He's obviously unwilling to do so.

We did have a couple of admins, TallyMan and Cornflake, who are sorely missed, who quit a couple of years ago. I know TallyMan quit purely out of frustration.

Then that's kinda weird IMO. No actual maintenance for years and frequent outages, seems to me the site could end up going down permanently and he might not notice? If he wants nothing to do with this site anymore, passing it on to somebody is one way to be free.

He should contact TallyMan and ask him if he wanted to take over the site as sole admin. Or maybe one of the moderators around here, I bet at least some of them possibly have skills to be the admin?

Approximately 8 hour outage overnight.

In addition a number of several minute outages during the day

Oh wow I must have just had bad luck! Was coming here to post that I think we just had ~18 hours outage, that's the last time it worked for me till now.

I wonder if anybody concluded "site must be gone now" from visiting at separate times on separate days when the site happened to be offline. If it happened to me for a week straight, site was offline every time I tried to visit for a week straight then I'd probably give up on WP and assume it's just completely gone.

It can't be crashes from overload, at least not overload by us... wonder what it is? (That's a rhetorical question. We can speculate, and that could be fun, though.)

Maybe the server has mini-meltdowns or executive functioning issues.
