I think its time to really add a delete button to my account or edit profile. Its relatively simple to add as well as a report to mod button instead of having to mindlessly pm mods or use a thread when there is more effective ways to do such.

because of phpbb based forums, there is no button yet, maybe when phpbb4 rolls around and if alex upgrades wrongplanet to it.

I am an admin on a phpbb based forum and its just the admins that can delete accounts.

maybe you can get the ball rolling by going to top and clicking contact us and suggest just that?? a delete account button??? never know, may get some action from the suggestion

phpbb3 does have the capability for "report post" icons within posts, and this capability is included in the two included phpbb3 themes, subsilver2 and prosilver.

it's a policy decision not to delete accounts.

hello merle, long time no chat, last i seen you was on cockneyrebel's post about puffed stomachs (when i had mentioned about old door closers) nice to interact with you again.

account and post deletion can also screw up the threads (conversation) and make it confusing to people reading it.

I'm just here to check a message I been waiting for and see if I can finally close my profile. Not exactly on both counts its relatively simple in most forum software to have it where old posts by a deleted account would simply show an x for an avatar and deleted under status and would not cause an adverse effect to conversations or the forums. I haven't actually used phbb I usually use simple machines though I have experience with other forum software.

The only reason I can see for not allowing members to delete their own accounts would be to inflate member numbers. In any case both options are very simple and do not disrupt most forum software or database entries if it does then they need to change to a more suitable set of forum software.

Currently member count is 26,184 and I believe at least 24,000 at least are inactive accounts. Honestly if they did a clear and allowed members to delete their own account the statistics would be correct and I wouldn't have to keep checking as to when I can officially close it.

You can stop checking. We don't close accounts. You could change all the threads to which you subscribe to not watching this thread, delete everything in your profile and change your password to gibberish then log out. It would effectively do the same thing.

I always wonder when I see this advice (I've seen it before). To change your password you have to type two matching passwords. So you can't switch your password to something random that you don't know.

  1. Type gibberish into a text editor, with the text area moved off screen, say, so you don't even see what you are typing.
  2. Highlight it (with Ctrl/A, say)
  3. If in a duff OS, type CTRL/C
  4. Erase gibberish (with Backspace, say)
  5. Move to first password box
  6. Paste
  7. Move to second password box
  8. Paste

OK, that would work.

Not quite ... it would actually just leave my record in there and be just leaving the profile which seems to be what you want. Effectively one allows actual alteration of records and one is just a silly attempt at acting like it does anything. I don't see the problem in adding a delete button to profiles and if your giving me silly advice that makes no logical sense then well that pretty much means there is an issue where you want these accounts open. If I delete the account the name would be available, I wouldn't be associated with this site in anyway, and your member counts would be correct (probably what you want to avoid anyway).

A - the answer is still the same. There is not an option for you to delete your account; regardless of opinion, it is site policy. You can abandon your account, you can make it inaccessible through the means described... if you want, you can remove all of your content personally. But deleting your account is not one of the options available to you.

I don't understand.

If somebody doesn't want to participate in wrongplanet, why do they feel a need to go through a complex process to make it impossible to log on?

I guess it has to do with the psychology of addictions.

Good question; some people don't want the option to come back. Since deleting an account is not an option, there is an alternative for those who need that sort of closure.

no, I am saying that deleting your account was never part of the WrongPlanet deal. When you made an account we clearly state:
Terms of Service wrote:

you clicked on 'yes' for this when you registered. Now you want WP to change the deal and cast aspersions about why we are inconveniencing you in your quest for being a special exception.

Merle
