How do you do this?

Is it easy being a Moderator as I think I would be suitable!! :)

I'm soooo tempted.

You've made a big blunder, already. You shouldn't state your aspirations, as people will immediately view you with suspicion. All's not lost, though being a male from the UK with an AS diagnosis does put you at a disadvantage.

I'd suggest doing your best to ingratiate yourself with the current moderators. Never challenge their authority, and occasionally pay them small compliments. Never discuss controversial issues and stay clear of politics. You will need to post regularly and if you can form a line of communication with one of them on a more personal level via PM, then you're well on your way!

Is it easy? Well, it shouldn't be, but as a number of them by their own admission do very little, I guess you could say it is!

Best of luck!

bad move edgey123!

in order to become a mod you have to maintain a strict, long term policy of humility and unswerving public service IN PUBLIC. If anyone asks you directly if you want moderating priviledges, the correct answer is;

'I have no ambitions in that area, my only concern is to serve my fellow aspies to the best of my modest abilties, regardless of race, creed, sexuality or political affiliation. However - if my fellow aspies considered that my efforts would be of service in a more formal context then, naturally i would (and with some reluctance) humbly accept the position.

In private though, that is quite a different matter. The best tactic is to create a few alter egos who turn up whilst the amircans are sleeping and start posting reams of miserable, desperate angst. You can then be the first on the scene with carefully pre-prepared words of advice and encouragement. Meticulously worded to be uplifting, inspiring and replete with reams of useful links. Do this every few weeks and youll soon have built up an awesome reputation as a latter-day saint. You could also consider secretly employing a few trusted long term members to support and prompt you in this area.

Ascan.

Are you saying having a diagnosis of AS is a definite disadvantage?

Not really. Ascan is trying to be funny. Ascan feels that everyone is out to get him because he's from the UK and he's a guy. It has nothing to do with the fact that he's prejudiced against others who don't agree with him.

Thank you, Edgey for letting us know!

What happens is that when Alex feels we need more mods, the current mods look at people who have expressed interest and we also nominate members who we feel would be good mods. We review prior post to see if they appear to be level headed. Contrary to some's opinion, we also try to get a mix of people, male/female, around the world, different options, etc. People have to have enough history on wrong planet for us to get a feel for the type of people they are. Can they disagree with someone without being disagreable? Are they supportive of members in need or do they make fun of them? The mods vote and the highest vote getters are asked if they are still interested.

I am explaining this as my experience. This is not an offical statement or anything.

What I'm saying, edgey123, is that your face must fit, just like in the real world.

The problem is not becoming one, it's unbecoming one.

Lot of truth there.

Its difficult to post as an individual once one becomes a mod. Sometimes opinions expressed as an individual get mistaken as "official" posts of sorts. A lot of self censoring happens.

If an opinion is expressed, a mod runs the risk of being accused of using the position to put down other's disagrement. We have an rule that a mod can't mod a thread they are involved in. Some members have said that isn't enough, that the very fact that a mod has posted a opinion is threating to those who might disagree. This limits what we can post further.

Some see us as easy target. If two non-mod members start attacking each other, a mod can step in and try to calm the thread before it gets to far. If a mod is attacked and another mod steps in to try to calm things, we are sometimes accused of being unfair and sticking together. Because of this, mods have to put up with more mud then other members.

Mods have stepped down but Alex tend to leave them their moderating authority.

I stay because I think I really can help out. I have the time. I have the thick skin. But if I were asked not to be a mod any more, I wouldn't mind.

Apparently I'm no longer a mod, even though my avatar tag still says I am. It wasn't hard - I just stopped posting for a while.

What's *really* weird is the people who are on the mod list. JayShaw has only made two posts in the last 10 months and yet he's still a mod. Whatever. If the rest of the people are as inactive as him then that would make this forum almost entirely unmoderated.

THE BELOW POST IS ENTIRELY MEANT IN HUMOUR AND SHOULD NOT BE INTERPRETED AS ANYTHING BUT HUMOUR

You have to stand on 1 toe, spin round 3 times then draw a pentagram on the floor. Once that is done, find a virgin (Shouldn't be too hard on this site, you've got 1 writing this message) and sacrifice them (Male or female, doesn't matter) and burn the body. Then, go to the White House, carrying a box labeled BOMB. After that, PM alex asking to be a mod.

Also, I have the same problem Jetson, I still have mine and I specificly asked Alex to remove me from the mods list.
