I did a calculation and if everone gives $ 0.077 then Alex can buy a new server. So that is even less in €. :sunny:

If everyone were to donate more, and on a somewhat consistant basis, we can keep this community run, and perhaps Alex will consider getting rid of the ads...

I have seen something odd, I thought that a few days ago that the traget was a four diget sum starting with a 3, it has now changed to 4800 USD. I migt be wrong, perhapes I have given myself a false memory.

I have mixed feelings about the ads, some of the ads seem OK but some of them seem to be for things which go against the general philosophy of the site.

i am totally planning on it....I do hope that with the new server there are less-invasive ads...
Though it seems they have gotten somewhat better....unless I have just gotten used to them...I have noticed slightly less of the stroby ads that made me nauseous, and a short while ago, there were those page load ads that almost made me want to quit WP..

Your right, it was lower, but why get one server when you can have two at twice the cost

Yh they changed it, ive only just noticed, im guessing that he had found a better server, i've already donated $25 which is £16.45 from London.... I hope the new server is so much better than this one, because some of the messages i've sent didn't go through and its quite frustrating to retype it again... Thats what the copy and paste if for

Alex said in another thread that he accidently put up the costing for the current server first, then corrected it to the cost of a better one.

I assume that WP is reaching storage/bandwidth issues then? If this is
the case, instead of spending $4800, maybe just use something much
cheaper like Bluehost? http://www.bluehost.com/tell_me_more.html

Unlimited bandwidth. storage, backup, etc with multi media things like
streaming video you can add on the site. It's something like $100 a
year.

Maybe I am missing something here...

Yes. I noticed the same thing with the change in the target amount. Not a false memory.

The ads don't bother me all that much.

Edit - Posted this without reading previous posts. I see now that Alex explained the discrepancy in target amounts. Pity
every member couldn't give him a buck a couple times a year. WP would be sitting pretty.

I still don't see why we need a new server if $100 will get us one that probably just as good if not better...

Why are people complaining about ads when they can be easily blocked? I´ve never seen ads on this site.

Is it for a new server or for a better host with more bandwidth? Bandwidth is the expensive part and with hundreds of people clicking refresh every 5 minutes to see new posts that bandwidth would get chewed fast

Note the "$100 dollar solution with "unlimited BW""

haha, wp would not even load one page on a crappy shared server like bluehost.

and to add insult to injury, look as this

Looking up the terms from that link
https://www.bluehost.com/cgi/info/terms.html

They don't mention fair use but they allude to it in section 7. 02.

I am sure a forum as big and active as this one would chew through bandwidth at a consistent and frightening rate. Such a service would frown upon that.

why is this turning into a discussion of a scammy hosting company ? are people that nieve?

by the way, i'm moving our server to a data center that peers with all the tier 1s in equinex's ashburn facility. I'm going to have a 320gbps connection and a new xeon quad core processor with 2 500 gigabyte drives and 4mb of ram
