West African scam user on WrongPlanet

This is a warning to all wrongplanet members; a user named baby210 left me a private message over the weekend:

My Name is Anita, I was very happy to see your profile today in this site (wrongplanet.net).
Please I will like to know more about you, so I will like you to please reply this my mail with your email address direct to my email not in the site so that I can give you my picture for you to know whom I am.

This individual is a scam artist trying to scam you of money. If you recieve a PM like this, please ignore it.

The dreaded 419 Nigerian scammer

I used to remove maybe 20 of these scammers a month from WP when I was taking care of the spam on WP. sorry, I don't have the tools to do it any more.

I can't take the credit for the actual banning this time. Unfortunately. I like dealing with scam artists. Especially when they make the mistake of PMing me. 'Darwin Award' springs to mind.

WrongPlanet seems to have an ongoing problem with Nigerian scammers. I don't indicate whether I'm male or female in my profile or in things like my avatar, and that seems to keep the scam love proposals to a minimum. For some reason, the Nigerians think we're all easy marks because we whine all the time about being unable to find love, and for some bizarre reason they think we have tons of money, which baffles me because it's pretty clear from reading the boards that most of us subsist on welfare or on menial/low paid work. I guess they simply don't care whether the person they're scamming has the money, or they think Americans are all rich.

I've seen TV reports on Nigerian scams, and most of the victims are dirt poor, and often give what little money they have saved to the scammers. Some go into debt to pay the scammers. Elderly people seem to be considered fat targets, and those with dementia are frequently losing life savings to not only Nigerians but phony psychics and other scams closer to home. In the last few years of my grandfather's life, he received a number of Nigerian scam letters. I got his mail and destroyed the fake checks and such. I myself have gotten fake credit offers, and I got them when I was deep in debt from my failed business and filing bankruptcy. How do they know? I hate to think of all the info that they have.

the problem with scammers, Nigerian or other wise on WrongPlanet.net is because only Alex can ban people that don't have any public posts showing.

If you get a PM from someone that wants something from you, PM Alex with the user name.

I remember in the old days befor the Web they would write make phone calls or write letters. It must have drained them so much for the postage!!
