I've been noticing a LOT of public service ads on WP lately. If you live in the US, most of them are from the Ad Council, so that Google can comply with a longstanding public service ad requirement that likely dates back to the early days of television. Ad revenue is way down, and the Ad Council, funded by the US govt and ad taxes, is what's keeping a lot of sites afloat. Anyway, I am now seeing one that is promoting "The Arts", and it has a soup container of the kind used for cook-in-the-can ramen on a serving tray and says "Feed your kids The Arts!" Every time I see that I get a mental image of an annoying teacher rolling up a painting and ramming it down the throat of a student. Or maybe pouring paint down the kid's gullet. "You'll eat your Art if it's the last thing you do, because it's GOOD fer ya!" "Awww, shucks!" Most kids probably feel that way about "great art". :P

Hmmm. The last 3 ads I looked at were also from the Ad Council. One of 'em said "Fact: You can make a difference," which doesn't even give me a clue as to what they're advertising. Silly Ad Council ads.

Here we see an ad for Toyota's driveaway deals.

Then the car speeds off...

Google tracks your behavior across all the sites that use their ads, so it may be something to do with other sites you visit as well. I was doing some research on Microsoft Media Server (code name Cougar) last week and now I get "Cougar Dating Site" ads from Google regardless of the sites I visit.

Haha, the same thing happened to me. I joined a group supporting Gene Robinson (gay Episcopalian bishop) and for the next few weeks Facebook kept giving me "Meet single men" ads.

I get lots of magical bodybuilding miracle ads, for some reason. I don't know how that happened.

Oh, and the ad on the left sidebar of WP has failed to connect for ages. Which is good for me, I guess. :)

The one about the arts doesn't give you any suggestions about introducing kids to the arts, it just links you to the homepage of an advertising agency.

These things seem to defeat the purpose of advertising. What am I missing?

I have the website for my computer business hosted with Network Solutions, a US based domain registrar, web host, and ad manager. Every time I have to go on NS's webpage to access my account, I get NS ads on WP for the next couple of weeks. If I haven't visited anyplace that's notable, I just get the public service ads. It's annoying to think that there are tracking cookies on my PC tracking that stuff. When did I give permission to Gooooooogle to do that?

It's advertising the Big Brothers/Big Sisters mentoring organization. In the US, BB/BS pairs successful adults with tweens and teens in the hopes of making productive citizens out of kiddies.

Easily solved, just set your browser to delete all cookies when it is closed.

I leave cookies enabled but have set Firefox to simply delete the lot every time I close the browser. Not that I ever see any adverts anyway because they are all blocked. Apparently there are adverts on this site?

That actually solves most problems with ad's.... I agree with t0 and it is apparently really true that they track your behaviour but I don't quite understand how on earth they came up with dirty ads when I didn't even go on porn? :?

Based on the sites you visit and even the content you post you are probably flagged as a young male adult. Therefore you are automatically interested in porn.
