The automatic downsizing-thingie doesn't seem to be keeping the aspect ratio. (It's only resizing the height)
Here's an example.

yes the resizing on the site looks out of whack. i just resize it in microsoft word, print screen, paint program, paste it, and upload it on an account like photobucket. it's annoying but it's either that or an awkward picture.

People shouldn't be posting images that are the wrong size. The downsizing script is only there to prevent the layout from being disrupted when people do. Ideally it would keep the aspect ratio.

There's easier ways around it, I think. For a picture posted here that you want, you can click on it if it's been resized; it'll take you to an error page, but if you delete the http://www.wrongplanet.net/preview.php?path= part in front, it'll go to the image.

For a picture you all ready have but want to post normally, you save the picture to your hard drive, then go to shrinkpictures.com, where you can upload the picture and it resizes it for you. The default is 350 pixels (though there's a list of preset sizes, as well as a box for custom sizes) and a "better" compression (the other options are "good" and "best"). It gives you the option to host at another site, but if you do, your only sharing option will be either the direct address or a thumbnail that you can click on that then takes you to the full sized image on the host site. I just save it and upload it to Photobucket.

Alternately, Photobucket has three sizes you can pick from. You upload the picture, click on it once you're in the album, and hover near the top of the picture. The option for resize should come up, and it has a drop bar with five options (four preset, plus one "more options" which I've never clicked but assume is custom). Even the biggest seems to be fine for here. However, you need to resize the picture before you link it here. I've had issues in the past where I uploaded them, linked them, realized they were too skewed, resized them in Photobucket, and then had only a few change here, even when I completely deleted and reentered the links. I have no idea why that would happen, but to save the time and hassle now, I just make sure to resize them beforehand. (For the examples below, I actually uploaded the full size picture twice, then just resized one of them before even linking it.)

People do post images.
The script does not prevent the layout from being disrupted.
Of course it could keep the aspect ratio, but it doesn't.

As may be seen here:
http://www.wrongplanet.net/postp834349.html#834349
for 2.5 years, the suggested maximum size for an image has been 640x480.

Alex decided a while ago to start resizing images to width 650. The script did not work.

Alex has now decided not to resize the images at all, but has decided to force member's browsers to resize them (again, just to 650, rather than 640 width).

E.g. this is a 600x600 preview from the Hubble Ultra Deep Field:
Image

However, the full resolution image is 6,200 × 6,200 pixels, file size: 18.19 MB, which I will not post here, as it would severly disrupt the page layout (by remaining 6,200 pixels high) and also severely inconvenience people with low bandwidth connections (as their browser is still obliged to download all 18.19 MB of the image, and store it somewhere, while it tries to display it with a width of 650).

Alex, are you able to change the resizing script to 640x480 or keep it to the right ratio?

Oh and when I click on the picture of the resized image, I would be unable to view the picture and I get some error message, is this any how possible to fix this issue?

How about the list of other issues that has been proffered repeatedly as existing issues that affect multiple users, some severely affecting their ability to use the site? Where should those issues and lists be posted?
