Lot of truth there.
Its difficult to post as an individual once one becomes a mod. Sometimes opinions expressed as an individual get mistaken as "official" posts of sorts. A lot of self censoring happens.
If an opinion
is expressed, a mod runs the risk of being accused of using the position to put down other's disagrement. We have an rule that a mod can't mod a thread they are involved in. Some members have said that isn't enough, that the very fact that a mod has posted a opinion is threating to those who might disagree. This limits what we can post further.
Some see us as easy target. If two non-mod members start attacking each other, a mod can step in and try to calm the thread before it gets to far. If a mod is attacked and another mod steps in to try to calm things, we are sometimes accused of being unfair and sticking together. Because of this, mods have to put up with more mud then other members.
Mods have stepped down but Alex tend to leave them their moderating authority.
I stay because I think I really can help out. I have the time. I have the thick skin.

But if I were asked not to be a mod any more, I wouldn't mind.
