I got an email saying I had a new private message, yet when I went to my inbox there was nothing there. Why?

I hate it when that happens. Sometimes when people send out a PM, they decide to not send it so they delete it before you can read it. I have had that happen to me several times and I always wonder who it was from and what did it say.

If you send a message, but it hasn't been opened by the recipient yet, it can be deleted in your Out(unread) box. If you get an email saying you have a message, but it's not there, they've deleted it from their Out(unread) box. Once you open it, they can't delete it anymore.

As before when I first signed up here years ago, I'm finding that after a long hiatus, and after only a few days back on here, I'm spending way too much time here again already. So if I get an email saying I have a message but there isn't one in my inbox, it means the writer changed his/her mind about writing me.

Am I understanding that right?

Yes.
