It isn't 1995 anymore, why is the limit still 15.4 KB or whatever?

Seriously. 15.4 KB x 52687 members = a max of 800 MB used for avatars. There's $65 hard drives nowadays that hold 1 TB...

That's true, not to mention a lot don't have avatars and mine is only about 7KB.
Unfortunately though it's doubtful the limit will be upped anytime soon.

I believe the avatars are stored as binary objects in the database, which is why the file size is so low. Any higher, and the database starts having issues pulling all the avatars.

Changing that would require a major rework of the backend code, which I can all but guarantee isn't going to happen.

EDIT: scratch that, they used to be in the database but now it appears that they're not. They are, however, stored on a content delivery network to speed up page loading times, and storage on the CDN is charged per MB, and it's not particularly cheap. That's probably why the file size is low.

The limit is perfectly adequate for static images.

I, along with many others, immediately block animated images.

always one in the crowd.

I just spent an hour making an image. A nice STATIC Captain America shield and it's above 16 kb.

Seriously?

How big is it, and what format is it in? And how big is it?

Pretty sure you could compress it down to a point where it would fit. A full layered PNG file w/ alpha channel is rather pointless, a nice 80% quality jpg is more than acceptable for an avatar.

it's a transparent png and if I try to save it as anything else, it'll lose it's transparency.

Seriously, they should up the limit to like 20.

so, you see,

this is a GIF image:

while this is a PNG image:

I don't see the harm in upping the avatar file size so long as the avatar isn't animated. Besides, even if it is animated and you don't like it,, that's your problem.

seems to have enough for those articles at the top which, IMO, could go on the homepage.

Can't you just make the dimensions of yours smaller though? I see no need to take advantage of the max dimensions (130px x 160px) if the avatar won't lose detail when made smaller.

Seriously, I'm playing with the pic right now in Gimp and it still looks fine at 100px wide.
