Pretty much what the topic title says. I’m new here and searching through old threads, and occasionally want to chime in. But this site is pretty old, so some of those are from 5 - 10 years ago. So, how does this site’s culture feel in regards to responding to those? I don’t intend to restart old arguments or anything, just general “does anyone else” type topics. Some of which seem kind of niche and not really worth making a new topic for again.

And while I’m at it, I guess this is the right forum for this question? Only other one that seems relevant is general discussion, but that seems like more general chatting.

I've wondered this as well. I've seen some old posts revived, but have been too hesitant to revive any myself.

I say why not--better to ask for forgiveness than permission, I suppose hehe. Maybe if you start reviving some posts, I will do the same.

Yes, it's allowed here.

^ ...within reason.

Very old threads were most likely started by someone who no longer visits WP, and probably many of the responders.
This usually results in questions addressed to them going unanswered - so before addressing someone on an old thread, check to see when they last posted (click on the avatar, then "Search user's posts"). If it's more than (say) a year, chances are you won't get a response.

There are dusty old posts here made twenty years ago so use your own judgement as to whether they really do need exhuming. Sometimes it's better to start a new thread on a related topic - views change over the years; it can be worthwhile attracting new thoughts with a new thread.

Also, try not to resurrect threads where the topic has been talked out over several pages or is no longer newsworthy - political threads, for example. What Senator X did/said 5 years ago might have been relevant then, but now?

And yep, this forum is correct for this type of question.

As user 5419, I've just celebrated my 18th joinday, which was just two years after Alex first posted.

Mind you. it took me eight months before my first post.

Interestingly(?), Alex was only user 3 and the earliest extant user was Dan Grover.

I'm waffling again.

Personally, and I don't know if this reflects how other people feel, I'd rather see someone start a new thread than revive a thread from years ago. It feel jarring to reread and rehash what someone said five years ago, and what is the point, since they are likely not here anymore.

^Personally, I think it's for the poster to decide if they want to breath new life in an old thread or start a new similar one.

I like how the other main forum I use is aggressive in locking necrobumped threads as well as insisting OPs are intended to start discussion.
