I can't figure out what the alpha numeric characters mean in the date ... can someone help me?

is there a way for me to change the settings of how the date of posts 'shows'?

The characters in that field correspond to values interpreted by the PHP date() function.

A table with all the different options, as well as example outputs, are here: http://us2.php.net/manual/en/function.date.php
