Here's the link in question:
http://www.neopets.com/refer.phtml?username=suziesuesue

I want to put this in my signature because I'm a huge Neopets fan and want to have other people play (plus I get prizes for referring people!). I don't really visit any other sites besides Wrongplanet though :P
Is this allowed?

Links are generally considered acceptable, although if found to link to unacceptable content they may be asked to change or have their signature removed. Graphics are not permitted in the signature field, or as a signature within the body of the message.

It's definitely acceptable, Neopets is a kid's site :)
Why are graphics not permitted?

Image sigs would be very distracting on this site especially in some forums such as
Off The wall and Games where some of us might have as many as five or more posts on the same page. By the way my sig is an embedded link to an image that is hosted off-site, well
within the rules.

Several reasons: it takes space to store those images if kept locally, or bandwidth for requests for those images if hosted remotely. They take up space, making it difficult for those using cellular phones, mobile devices or a dial-up internet connection to access the site. And many on the spectrum are sensitive to visual stimuli. There is already a space for an avatar; anything beyond that is somewhat gratuitous in my opinion. If you have further questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Is there any way of showing just linked text rather than just the linked url?

Like this..

I love carving

In the control panel, it says "Type your signature with HTML coding" - so I tried is as:

Quote:
<a href="http://wrongplanet.net/postxf8620-0-2276.html">I love carving</a>

.. and (without the space after "url"):
Quote:
[url =http://wrongplanet.net/postxf8620-0-2276.html]I love carving[/url]

.. but neither seems to work in my signature.

Wrong Planet Rules:
Signatures, Avatars, and custom ranks.
--------------------
* To use a signature, we ask that you place the signature text in the signature form on your user profile. Including signatures in the actual text of your posts is not permitted. WrongPlanet moderators may edit any post that contains a signature in the text of the post.
* Signatures should be no more than 6 lines long and may not contain any images or scripts of any kind.

(what 'signatures' mean here is not known to me)

Depending on what the content is about, but if it is a virus link then you're most likely gonna get told differently by the mods... Not a good idea but blogs are ok and sites that contain useful stuff are good too. :)

you can do it, yes. the formatting should be like this:

[url=http://www.google.com]google[/url

^^^i removed the final bracket. i tested it and it worked.

i could not find anything in the rules that prohibit this, as long as the link is appropriate.

Which means the following all singing, all dancing version should be Ok too:
Click here for Google.
This is written as:

Code:
Click [url=http://www.google.com][color=blue][u]here[/u][/color][/url] for [i]Google.[/i]
It seems the documentation for the signature should refer to BBCode, not HTML.

General .sig (signature) history: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Signature_block

Nope, doesn't work for me - maybe it only works for moderators.
