Hello,

I received an e-mail stating that I had a new PM, but when I logged in, I did not have any messages in the inbox. What happened?

When you send a PM, the recipient (if they opt for it) receives a fairly immediate email. However, by the time that email has arrived, and the recipient (you) has got around to looking in their inbox, the sender may have changed their mind about sending the PM, and can delete it. The email that was sent cannot be retracted.

So... I just did exactly that. I sent you a PM, then went straight to my "Out (unread)", marked it and deleted it.

A similar (unavoidable) fault crops up when you are watching a thread. Sometimes you will get an email saying there is a new post, but when you click on the link, you get a "does not exist" message. This typically means the post got deleted between the time the email about it was sent, and you getting to look for it. It's rather annoying, because you will NEVER get another "watch" message for the thread, unless you dig around and figure out which thread it was, and go there. (That's the only way the software knows that you need a new reminder email - when it has seen you visit the thread, and can reset the flag that says you will need a new email.)

So THAT'S why that happens! That's an annoying one.

We can reset that by clicking the subscribe link though, can't we?

No need to. You merely have to view the topic. You will see that you are still watching it. As soon as you view it, the flag saying "don't send another email" gets reset, and you're back in the game.

However, that said, the simplest way to get back to the topic is to click the "unwatch" link in the email. :)

The second way would be to just remember which forum the topic is in, and look for its title there. (That's what I most often do.)

The third way would be to view any topic, then edit the topic number out of the email's "unwatch" link into your address bar. Fiddly, but guaranteed.

(Oh, and in each case, you still need to figure out for yourself whether there have been any posts since you last saw the topic. That you can do by looking at the post number in the email, and seeing if any posts at the end of the topic have higher numbers - by hovering over the Image.)

Yeah, that's generally what I do anyway. Most of the time, unless there's a thread I started, I don't even bother with the emails. They tend to make me want to check everything and reply to too many. I don't get anything else done! So I have all the WP emails send to a WP folder, where they're easier to ignore.

Plus, that helps because my ADD makes me forget most of the threads I've posted in, enabling me to get other stuff done.

Goodness, that way to involved for me. I just peruse. It doesn't take long to see what's new if I'm already limiting the number of threads I'm active in as I described above. It's not that hard to remember what was said, who said it, and where it is when I'm only dealing with five or less threads at a time.

EDIT: Of course my way sucks if the site's really slow loading pages, but then if it is too slow, I just sign off and come back later. That helps limit my time here too.

Oh, so PM's can be unsent as long as they're unread -- I see. Thanks lau.

As for the original notice, I looked at it again earlier today, and I realized it was dated 9/24 -- which I hadn't noticed previously. Do PM's expire if not read after a certain length of time?

PMs never expire as far as I know. I still have PMs I sent that were never read and one was from almost a year and ago and the other is from this summer. Never been read by those users. They only expire when you want them too

Plus I hate it when someone sends me a PM and then delete it. I am then always bummed out there is no PM after getting excited I got one so what I do is when I see I have a new PM, I go to it and open it and then go back to the forum so that way the user can't delete it before I get the chance to read it. :P

Could the forum software be set to send the contents of the PM in the notification email?
