How about putting the "Ask xxxxx anything and I will answer" threads all in their own category. If people want to visit them fine but in my opinion they are spammy and muck up the other categories.

Anyone else agree?

Alex won't create a new category on the site for what will be a passing fad. I've seen several fads over the last few years. They hang around a few months then fizzle out. I do agree they are somewhat spammy though and there are a lot of them.

So people have to be spammed for few months, because...?

One junk category would really help. Also threads like "is it cheating when you create embarrassing crap threads on the net" should be moved there. And if not new category, move this crap to Random Discussion http://www.wrongplanet.net/forum24.html at least

How is it spamming? Maybe a "Ask xxx about her website" would be spamming but not silly threads like that.

There are a lot of threads I dislike, and the way I handle that is I don't click on them. Works every time.

Yeah, so you don't mind to have inbox full of spam, you simply "ignore" it, right? 8)
Why are there so many antispam protections if the solution is this simple...

It is not about dislike. Sure, I am not happy to see so many desperate people trying to draw attention this way. Anyway if it helps them feel better, I am all for it. But do it somewhere I can ignore you effectively.
Not in Members Only Discussion, where I would expect something more mature and in order with "This forum allows more privacy than the other forums. Only registered members can read it." Whole MOD is devalued this way.

Your inbox is different from the forum you know.

Alternatively, being a little more tolerant might help with the remaining time it takes for them to fizzle out - they're already slipping off the front page.

I don't understand one thing - why is there any opposition to Pompei's request? Status quo bothers people. How the change restricts anyone? It has no drawback - positives only, still we are the intolerant here?

The members themselves decide what themes are popular by posting to them and consequently moving them to the top of the board. Neither moderators nor the site owner should have any say in what the members want to talk about. The threads seem spammy to me, but many members disagree by posting to them. Another issue is that the members forum cannot be seen by none members, which makes it the best forum if members are going to reveal personal information about themselves and their lives. The site is remarkably self regulating with little intervention by mods or admins. This current fad will fade and be replaced sooner or later by another. There is no need to redesign the site around a passing whim.

One moderator a couple of years ago (who is no longer a member) made the huge mistake of trying to corral the number of chat theads that were occurring in the adult forum and the members actually rebelled and gave him a virtual bloody nose over it! Members themselves chose what members create threads about.

Sure thing. Nobody says you should tell members what they may/not write (you do it anyway :P ).

But there is stats category, LGBT, Foreign Languages etc, but no junk one. So there are junk threads all over the place. Anyway I see Off the Wall & Random Discussion here. Would't be better to ask members to move this stuff here? Members Only Discussion is suitable for much relevant stuff in my eyes.

"Junk threads" is extremely subjective and as TallyMan has said, members themselves decide what is popular: that's why these threads exist - people like them and don't think they're junk.
Also, "Members Only" seems perfect to me for topics inviting people to ask their OPs "anything".

Yer, I don't see much point to them either.

Hmmm... Well first off, I wasn't to know that it was going to be a fad for other members.
I mean the topic I made which was the first one was a look into myself behind the screen without it being known those who visit, not for the purpose of spamming or wanting attention. I made mine well before it became a fad.
Besides there's loads of threads that people will argue and disagree... want getting rid of... but at the end of the day, the key is to ignore the threads.
Like the saying goes, ignorance is bliss.

Point is there were so many ask threads some people started to ignore whole Members Only Discussion, which is shame

The "ask away" threads won't give anyone spam in their email unless they click on them and ask to be notified of replies to them. And that wouldn't be spam anyway because it would be solicited email.
