Difference in Appearance Before and After Logging In

On the front page, before logging in, there's this text
Step 1: Create a support network—We need people…

After logging in, it looks like this
Step 1: Create a support networkâ€"We need people…

that is, the mdash is corrupted. I've seen the same phenomenon in other sites, too, but here it depends on one's log status. How can that be? Obviously both the mdash {—} and the corrupted string of characters {â€"} are visible in this post, so it cannot be a browser-specific thing.

And idea just occurred to me. I must check the appearance of this post both logged in and logged out. Just a second.

Negative test result, never mind. – Anyway, something new emerged. The difference in appearance doesn't depend on whether one is logged in or out, but on whether or not one browses the site deeper than the front page. At least this is what I observe locally.

EDIT: My bad! Two bodies of text which I mistakenly thought were the same. Case closed :duh:
