Today when I logged on, I was greeted with an advertisement that blocked out the whole page and had to be closed.

This is too intrusive.

I routinely run Adblocker because I don't like clicking a link and a video auto-playing. WrongPlanet is on my exceptions list, because I value the site, understand it seems to be practically at breaking point, and for the most part I can stomach the ads.

If these intrusive adverts remain, I will have little choice but to remove WP from my exceptions list and block this site's ads.

Ditto. I got one of them yesterday as well, clicking the login link. I'm pretty sure Alex doesn't want those occurring. There are still some slide in windows that pop up on occasion as well. Survey stuff, but I can't remember who they're from. They all seem to happen infrequently enough they aren't being reported here. It's hard to remember what was clicked before they occur, and not that hard to close them, so we're probably not hearing about most of them.

We're running a test. It's capped at once per user per month so you most likely won't see it again.

it shouldn't be a video ad.

Ah! That explains it. They were not video ads that I've seen. Pop ups don't really bother me unless there's a lot of them. Unexpected audio does though, and I haven't heard those in a long time. One of my computers is a DAW connected to a pretty powerful sound system that I occasionally forget to turn down. I remember a year or maybe more ago, one played unexpectedly at around 3 am and woke the whole house up.

Hasn't happened since though.

I can't stand ads with audio that plays automatically. I usually wouldn't want to have an ad like this but its capped at once per month per user and the rate the ad network is giving us makes it worth at least testing.

Yeah, there was no audio or video.

Once a month should be fine :)

Thanks for your understanding and support. I am of the same opinion re: ads (wish we didn't need them) but the amount of traffic we get requires that we spend a lot of money every month on server costs, content delivery networks, email delivery services, and many other various costs associated with running a major Internet site.
And I am in the process of redesigning the site, which will cost a bit as well.

I'm thinking about implementing a 5$/month ad-free subscription for people who want to support the site, but don't want to see any ads.

Just so you know, it was probably just an aberration but I just got one of the full page overlays and about six pop ups after opening a WP email post alert.

Well, I'm up to 3... Somethings wrong with your algorithm.

You're not clearing your cookies or using a diff browser, are you?

I've got to be honest, I don't think the "ad free subscription" would go down particularly well, based on what I've seen from other communities.

Also, I've noticed that most of the ads I am seeing recently are adverts for... Alex Plank. I know the free advertising might be doing you some good (personally I'd imagine that most people who reach this site are aware that you exist, and what you do), but is it the best use of space?

Would I be making that comment if I was - I'm a web developer myself, I have a fair idea of what could go into causing said problem and how stupid I would look if I made that comment after clearing cookies - Last time I did that was last month. That does not excuse the 3 this month thus far.
