My apologies in advance if this question has been answered elsewhere. I searched and couldn't find it.

I'm still pretty new to this site and to forums in general. I'm wondering if there are any written (or unwritten I suppose) rules of etiquette when sending private messages.

Is it ok to message a stranger out of the blue when you're uncomfortable posting a response to their post in public? Or should you only message those you already know or have their permission?

Thanks!

don't do what you normally can't do in normal postings. other than that, feel free to PM people but you can't expect a response [or even a civil response] in all cases.

The forum rules apply equally to PMs too. So provided you stay within the site rules you should be fine. However, if a member asks you not to PM them again you must respect their wish. That's all I can think of at the moment. As auntblabby mentions, don't expect everyone to reply though; some members don't like communicating by PM and prefer the open forums.
