I see lots of big avatars here.
But when I try loading mine it keeps saying
image has to be less than 16KB, and by the time
I have painstakingly gradually shrunk it down enough
to be excepted, I end up with a tiny blurry av.
When it looks like this on every other forum I'm on:

It's not just a question of resolution - often, the compression method and colours need to be optimised to reduce the file size and this can usually be done without sacrificing the resolution.
