what does OP mean?

This is probably a daft question, but I am not a technically adept individual!

OP just means Original Post or Original Poster to refer back to the starting post of the thread, or refer to the person who posted it.

It is a convenient term if the name of the OP is long or if you are in the middle of responding and have forgotten the name of the erm... OP.

It has two very different meanings, depending on the context. In the context of a post on an internet forum, it usually refers to the "original poster", or the person who started the thread. In the context of a video game discussion however, OP will often refer to something being overpowered, like a character or a weapon. If you're discussing games on a forum, this can lead to some confusion.

^ There is also a third meaning. OP = Operator. This was/is commonly used in IT depts to refer to the computer operator i.e. the guy who handles the day to day running of the computer systems and is responsible for doing backups, generating reports and other aspects of maintaining the hardware and operating systems.
