If there's a game that I want to start in the Off the Wall forum, and there's an existing thread for that game, but it's really old, what should I do? Is it better to necrobump the thread or start a new thread?

I hate necrobumping but the mods here seem laid back on this issue to me, I would bump it here but not another forum.

I don't know the moderators official policy on this but being on the Off the Wall forum I would assume its even more ok. I have never witnessed a mod coming down hard on this so I logically conclude that they don't care.

I like necrobumping, too.

I think it is often better to bump old threads no matter how old they are, that way you don't replicate the same conversation over and over and over and over and over.....and anybody looking for information/viewpoints/discussion about that topic can access more in one place.

Bumping old threads annoys me, unless it's something like the "You might be Aspie if..." thread.

Once somebody bumped an old thread, and I replied to it - only to realize that I was the OP of that thread which I had created about 4 years ago.

That's what I think, too. I don't get why "necro-bumping" is so widely hated, unless you want to ensure discussions are kept shallow or don't want to bother to check the date of the post you're replying to if it's something that loses relevance quickly.

I don't like it because often I want to respond to someone that hasn't been on WP for years. Someone bumps it, and then there is no chance to communicate with the people who actually made interesting points.

How is that worse than not even knowing the discussion took place or having the chance to address those points with the people currently on the forums, including the necro-bumper?

It's not worse. It's just annoying at times. It also depends on what's being discussed. Some things I don't really think are worth it.

And if the discussion is too old, some information may no longer be useful or relevant. Links, images, research, diagnoses, etc. may all have changed.

one of the reasons it's frowned upon here is that we've had a few cases where someone necrobumoed a thread where the OP has actually passed away (and the thread had something to do with OP him/herself). i think there it is pretty clear there's not much further discussion to be had.

otherwise i don't really think our policy is much different that that of any other forum out there.
