viewtopic.php?f=11&t=16892&start=10170

This thread has existed for years and was created (I think) long before photo matching apps became available, which can be used by trolls as well as people of good faith. So the thread above seems to have become less safe for members. One poster there has reported the trolling she received on her Facebook account after posting her photo in the PAPOTRY thread.

Any member who wants their photo removed from that particular thread (only), let me know by posting a request here and I will do my best to action your request asap.

What about the other picture threads? What are people doing with these pictures? Somehow tracking your Facebook profile with it?

I am only willing to deal with that one thread because of personal time and energy limits Jacoby. Already I donate quite extensive amounts of time to WP in terms of moderating, and I want to reduce (not further extend) this in future.

Read the other thread in this forum re your last two questions, the answer to your last question is yes.

This is why you never should "Post a Picture of the Real You". Trolls can do a reverse image search and spread on.

* Set your social media security settings restrictively
* Don't post too much info about yourself.
* Use different aliases on sites that you do not want to associate with your real life person.

I agree it's worrying now that there are reverse-find searches which mean that an image can be traced to any other online place it's been posted, such as people's Facebook and Twitter images and albums and other websites.

Possibly it might be safer to post a picture that has never and will never appear anywhere else, but even that I'm not 100% sure of.

Thank you B19 for this very kind offer to remove people's pictures as I know that's going to be a lot of work.

I wonder if people can also make their own picture vanish from that thread if it was hosted by something like Image Shack, and they go to that account and remove if from that host site? Because the link is gone, it should disappear from their post here too, I'm thinking?

What you can't do is force those who saved a copy to delete it.

Honestly, I am bit worried of possible persecution from muslims who seem to be very devout here due to my atheist and criticism on islam posts; and who knows, they might be pro isis.

I would like all my pictures to be removed, I don't recall on which page it exists....maybe you have mod powers that can filter posts per user?

Unfortunately there is no way of locating them like that (as far as I know).

Is it possible to just move the thread to Members Only. At least then it's not public and only people registered on the site can see it.

It doesn't prevent users who already have access to the site sharing screenshots or the images, though.

I can imagine people who have a disagreement on PPR or an anti-LGBT person sending member data to trolls being one scenario.

How many pictures of yourself have you actually posted under your current username? There's still an old picture of you with other Wrongplanet members in the Members Only forum about when there was WP meet up at one point but that was under your original account, it wasn't posted as The_Face_of_Boo.

There are more recent photos.

The very old ones would be very hard to find anyway.

reverse image search has existed for a long time. Don't think this thread should have been created as it scares people into not sharing their pictures.

^ The world got significantly more dangerous than before, alex - for example there was no isis.

Persecution via the internet is not uncommon nowadays; there are people out there who are ready to do anything to reach someone who offended their beliefs.

Doxxing is a very real threat today. People get doxxed for anything these days.

I can only suggest people that upload pics modify them slightly from their social media ones by adding a tag, cropping it every so slightly etc.

I think B19 has a right to be concerned and remind others to remain vigilant. Pretending the problem doesn't exist in order not to hurt feelings or confuse, only leaves people in the dark and those in the know frustrated and disenfranchised, especially here. I think offering solutions, advice and reminders is useful and practical, and it puts safeguards in place for others.
