I take it that using a VPN here is frowned upon.

I'm using Opera which has a built-in VPN capability, but when I tried to sign on a few minutes ago, it wouldn't let me and instead wanted an e-mail address and a note detailing why I wanted to post here. I turned off the VPN and was able to log right in.

I use a VPN with Safari and Opera. They work alright for me. I’ve had that same message a couple of times over the years. I don’t recall what causes it, but I’m sure someone else will know.

I've never had any issues using a VPN here that I didn't have with a normal connection.

I will note that the Opera "VPN" is not as bad an idea as some "free VPNs" (never install the "Hola" extension) but it is still a bad idea in most cases. See: https://www.tomsguide.com/us/opera-vpn,review-4496.html

Thanks for the link. That answered a couple of questions.

I also have the ProtonVPN, but haven't set it up on this computer (running SuSE Linux) yet. I mainly just use it on my laptops for when away from the office.

I use the VPN Private Internet Access & I never had a problem accessing this forum cuz of it.

Same here, I just turned it off and bam I can get on. Our VPN is from AVG.
