How old is too old to resurrect a thread?

It's been a long time since I've been on a phpBB forum. What is the proper netiquette for starting a new thread vs posting in an old buried one of the same topic?

Also, if I wanted to talk about languages or linguistics what subforum would that be?

These are just my opinions...

It may not be a good idea to resurrect a thread when:

• The situations discussed in the OP have since been resolved.

• The events discussed in the OP are over.

• The politicians discussed in the OP are no longer in office.

• The person who started the thread is no longer a member, especially if they have been perma-banned.

• The subject is a debunked conspiracy theory.

• The thread treats magic, psychic ability, or the supernatural realm as if they were real.

• The thread treats Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, or other cyptozoological creatures as if they were real.

We don’t really have any rules on this, but I would generally say:

- If there is a thread that is less than a month old, people will expect you to use it.

- If the latest thread is over a year old, people will be surprised and possibly irritated if it is bumped.

- In-between, you can pretty much pick and choose as you like.

Yeah, but ... what if ...

Sometimes I have a tough time deciding whether to resurrect a years-old thread or start a new one on the exact same subject.

What then?

This seems reasonable, thanks!

I live with a person, my stepmom, who believes in all of it. ALL OF IT. Nothing is too ridiculous.

It's good to be open minded but not too gullible. Fnord's personal experience is that it's all hooey but others may find different conclusions.

I don't mind if interesting topics are rediscovered and resurrected on here - ones that are still fun to discuss further but were simply forgotten and buried under Pile 13.4(b).

There dont seem to be any actual written rules.

But I think that you can revive (almost) any thread that you want, as old as you want, as long as...you acknowledge that you are aware that it is an old thread, and as long as the topic is still relevent. Just say in your post that "I know that this thread is X number of years old, but I think that its still relevant, ....".

You can be as flakey as you want and talk about paranormal stuff all that you want. But dont give advice to some guy about his girlfriend when the guy posted it ten years ago.

There is no subforum about linguistics per se. There is a subforum for writing IN languages or than English. You could post there , or in the Science forum, or in the Random Conversation forum- if you wanna share about historic linguistics or like that.

There are no rules about so called necro-posting on WP, and the developer Alex has previously stated that he doesn't see a problem with it, so resurrect away.

My personal view is that I always think it's fun to revisit old threads, and I'm glad it's not frowned upon by the admin. I know some members dislike it, but I'm glad WP allows it unlike some other places.

The only reason I see to avoid a particular topic is if it was really personal to the OP, rather than general, like natural plastic mentioned.

Also, in the past we had some people resurrect several threads on the same topic. That would count as spamming. One topic will do.
