Is there a page to click onto that shows when you get a reply in a thread? Thanks.

There is a checkbox below the "post a reply" section which will send you an email when anyone posts

^ You can make that the default action by going to My Account -> Board preferences -> Edit posting defaults and set the option "Notify me upon replies by default" to "Yes". (My Account is a link available at the top right of any page)
Finally, click the "Submit" button at the foot of the page.

This means that for any thread you've posted to, you'll receive an emailed update alert that a new post has been made to that thread.
Notification for subsequent posts will not be made until you've visited that thread. (posting is not necessary in this case)

If you want to receive notifications for a thread you've not posted to, click on the "Subscribe topic" link to the left of the header located at the top of any thread - it's underneath the thread's "Page x of y" count.
This is automatically activated if you've changed your board preferences as above and posted to a thread.

I'm receiving email notifications for some topics I'm watching, but not necessarily all. That makes me think it's not my email service provider (gmx) that's blocking them, because although gmx has recently made its spam filtering "service" compulsory (thanks, gmx  ), the content of the emails is so similar that I'd think it if let one through then it would let them all through. If my reasoning is correct, then it would seem likely that the WP software isn't always sending me notifications in the first place. Could that be the case?

My workaround is to do My Account > Overview > Show Your Posts
which seems to list (most recent first) not only my own posts but also the subsequent replies to all the topics I'm watching. At least that's what I think it's listing, as judged by my observations so far. Is that correct?

Huh yes, ISPs imposing rubbish spam filters - my last one did that.
I had no control over what was filtered and no means of whitelisting addresses; it turned out to be the last thing they did to me and I moved to a new ISP. :x

When the updates were in a real mess, some time ago now, I got into the habit of keeping a tab open on a similar but better focused page as yours: try My Account --> Overview --> Manage subscriptions.
That shows post activity on your subscribed topics only so even if the emailed notifications aren't happening for some reason, you still get to see which topics are being updated.

Once upon a time Firefox had a timed page refresh option but it seems to have vanished. An extension is available to provide that functionality but I've dropped Firefox in favor of Vivaldi, which (apart from being very good) has retained the timed page reload.

I set it to reload the page every minute, so the result is a "live-ish" list of subscribed topics in order of activity.

As regards the emailed updates - as far as I know I'm receiving all of them, but the pop-up window on receipt of a PM seems to have stopped working. I still get the emailed alert, just no pop-up.

I see that My Account --> Overview --> Manage subscriptions does indeed work, though in my case it lists exactly the same posts as My Account > Overview > Show Your Posts does, at least for the first 20 or so posts, I didn't look further down than that. But both are good.

GMX advised me that to register a sender against their spam filtering antics I should add them to my "contacts list," so I just took a look and [email protected] is definitely there. Not a pleasant experience, using their web-based email access, Thunderbird is much better, but with that I can't access their contacts list, so I had to bite the bullet. Anyway, unless GMX is doing something really stupid (wouldn't put it past them!), the notifications simply aren't being sent.

Ironically I opened that GMX account so I could get away from Microsoft, but it's going the same way. When I tried to open a second GMX account recently, they demanded a mobile phone number, so I went to Proton. They're almost as bad, and even worse in some ways, but at least no mobile phone demand - yet.

Hah - you're lucky GMX even has a whitelist.
Yes, Demon Internet (or whatever they're called these days) - I'm scowling at you.

I've found why PM popup notifications weren't happening - among the many wondrous configurable items in Vivaldi I missed that popups can be enabled per site. Same as Firefox, really, but stashed away in a different place.

But thread update alerts? Still no issues here - they all seem to be Ok.
I'll try to keep a closer watch on those enabled vs. posts made actually generating alerts.

Having to hand over mobile phone numbers is irritating; I have some (small) sympathies what with spam being the problem it is. I suppose it enables a working means of contacting someone who gets pulled up for spamming, but it's not something that couldn't easily be done by banning the account and showing a reason why at the next attempted use of it.
