^ I champion dark mode whenever and wherever I can, in person and online. It is not healthy to stare into a light source for hours at a time like we moderns do, and anything to reduce the amount of light is a positive from the medical perspective.
I used to have 20/20 vision, no more, a lifetime spent staring at televisions and computer monitors has damaged my sight.
I don't think WP is going innovate in any particular way, and my reason for thinking so is Alex has not been seen in a long time and the articles that you see when you go to the main site are pre-pandemic. I think WP is in "maintenance mode" and that "dark mode" will be when it goes offline. I would insert a laughing emoji here, except for my New Years Resolution not to use emojis, in deference to the preferences of others here.
In lieu of any such change, I suggest using Firefox as your browser, and installing a plug-in called Midnight Lizard. It turns sites dark, albeit without the fine-tuned finesse that you can get from a site-specific dark mode. The plug-in has been around for years and works pretty well, but your mileage may vary. I believe it does offer options to customize the darkening. Perhaps some innovative and hard-working autistic brother could customize for Wrong Planet and share their customization with the rest of us. I am using it now, just while I am writing this message, and there are problems. The buttons are no longer buttons, but blend in with the background. The table borders used for organization are mainly invisible. That is why I typically do not use Midnight Lizard on Wrong Planet.
