I have done much software quality assurance work in my life. Never have I come across such a slow site prone to so many errors.

Yes, this site wins! :?

Almost every post or reply I makes directs me to an error page, the most recent (Upon attempting to open and read a post) was "Could not access smilie data". What?

Does anyone else experience this?

I hope someone looks into these issues as it makes the user experience very unfriendly, makes the site look quite unprofessional and, in truth, makes me not want to come here.

Thanks.

(Thread moved from Random to wp.net discussion)

Yes, everyone is experiencing the same problems. Not only is the software full of bugs but the site is gradually crumbling under the load and most of the errors you get are related to the server not being able to handle/complete all the requests it is getting. The underlying database is massive now. Supposedly a new version of the site software is under development but I'll believe it when I see it. In the mean time, the errors get more a more frequent every day. Sooner or later the site will likely collapse under its own weight into a black hole and suck all the users in, never to be seen again.

I appreciate your candid response! :)

I hope the problems do not reach black hole levels. This site is full of positivity for people like us and we need it. :!:

Thanks,
Matthew

Yes I've noticed this too.

I see lots of room for optimisation to increase the speed, but more resources on the server/s are defiantly needed. It's likely that this site doesn't make enough revenue to afford the additional resources. I could offer my opinions - as could many developers on this forum - but they wouldn't make a difference lol.

As has been posted to this (apparently write-only) forum many, many times - the forum software as you see it now is not under active development.
It is what it is, errors an' all.

This version is old and has been pushed well beyond anything it was ever designed to handle.
A new version is apparently being developed, but we have no news of any delivery date.

Gah, typo.

it would be tragically ironic if this forum died due to being too alive and active

I would not even say as much as "I'll believe it when I see it" related to new site software.

Alex is just not doing it and is not going to do it. Even the designs he showed us look like something he did himself, probably in a graphic design package or in Photoshop.

I could understand it if he just did not show up and use the site at all. I could also understand it if he would explain that he has zero budget or time to deal with the site, and that he is just going to leave it. What I cannot understand is him mentioning once in a while that he's working on something related to the site and then never actually doing it. That makes him look flaky to say the least.

Wrong Planet is a source of camaraderie for so many aspies and "fringe individuals" such as myself. It's frustrating to see that Alex just isn't updating the site at all. Why not sell the site to someone who will actually give it the dedicated attention it needs.

There should also be a donation system. If money is the problem then why not do what many other (thriving and expanding) forums do and encourage users to donate money. I would personally give £5-10 because WP is such a central part of my life and coping mechanisms. There is simply no substitute anywhere on the net.

I agree, and in fact I would offer to buy the site from Alex if I thought he would even respond to such a request.

Another bug: "View results" does not work in Firefox. It often works in Chromium but not always.

(Posting a reply works, but as a largely neurotypical I don't want to skew the results.)

I'm replying to this now. I haven't experienced many errors since I have joined this site until about March. The past 2 or so months have been HORRIBLE. I would often write a long message and it would say "sent" only to not send. I have to post comments 4 times for them to go through. Errors everywhere. Also, the very annoying "You have 2 new message". It's messages, omg. OK, that's a very minor issue, but it really bugs me. LOL

Would Alex be willing to let someone fix the site for free? I'm serious. I bet people here would be willing. There has to be a few people here who can code well.

^ Alex has got a software firm to create a new version of the site software; however, he's left it so late and the developers are taking so long, that this site is effectively being run into the ground and members are starting to jump ship and go to other autism/asperger sites. As for maintenance of this site, it is extremely unlikely it will ever happen, some of the bugs have been known about for many years and new ones appear all the time.
