I think that if offensive posts are made, instead of just locking the thread, the post should be removed all together. There are some very upsetting things floating around out there. For example(i'm not singling anyone out, but this post reminded me to make this thread) : http://www.wrongplanet.net/modules.php? ... 77#1372077

The second to last post on there, really should get removed, as it is mean, hostile, and all around vulgar.

anyone else agree?

Who are you suggesting should get to decide what is offensive?

In the example given I personally agree with you, personal attacks have no place on this site.
But I remember a poster (Forgot who, and it isn't the point anyway) who said that homosexuality was "abnormal" and as a result was called offensive, in that case it came down to how you read the word "abnormal" weather it was offensive or not.

The moderators can already remove posts if they feel the need to, but they rarely do that as it gets quite confusing.

I'd say the homosexuality thing is offensive, but it's an opinion. I'm talking about posts that use foul language, are attacking someone, or are jut plain disgusting. For example, if the post you were talking about included derogatory language, like the F-name(you know, like the n word, also means cigarette) Then I'd say that should be deleted.

There *are* children on here, and they shouldn't be subjected to that kind of post.

The site does have a filter to censor foul language, and personal attacks are already mentioned in the rules for the site.

If a post breaks the rules of the site, then the moderators can delete them, if they are made aware of the violation that is.

So aren't you suggesting something that is already being done? :?

I maybe responsible for a little foul language, and I do agree, there seems to a lack of etiquette on this forum by a few members, who have disregarded the forum rules or have never even tried to read them. A few days ago one of the resident trolls made a who is aways in everyones face, started with the name calling with me, and this was out of nowhere, I did not do the same to him, he had read an off hand joke I had made about his state of texas and dancing being illegal, my post wasn't directed at him either, its impossible to argue with these types as they are always right. I really doubt the moderators will do anything about any flaming on this site as there are to many people to babysit. I am disgusted with alot of the topics on this forum, so I am taking some advice, I am not going to read them, or give any opinion, and I suggest that everyone does the same, as nobody who posts a topic, likes it when there is no reply.

If we erased all of the mistakes in our history - how would we learn?

Are the forums an exception?

If we don't learn from the mistakes of our history, we're bound to repeat them. Obvious stuff like name-calling, foul-language, racial slurs and discrimination aimed @ the individual should be banned and the person who did it should have to face some consequence determined by the site administrators. That's not violation of free speech. That's COMMON SENSE AND COMMON DECENCY. :)

I agree with the very personal attacks and the name calling to an extent. But what I wonder is how can one just ignore the trollish member if they do the same thing to them in other threads as well?

It would be great if people not carry over trollish behavior from other threads, sort like "what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas" but trolls being who they are, like to spread the mayhem everywhere, it seems to be the rule on most forums, people are going to behave like morons when they have this anonymity, they think they can say or do whatever they wish, with no repercussions, this is not a bad thing, its great that people have this freedom, but there should be some limits in place for acceptable behavior, being a courteous respectful member, this should be the norm on this forum especially.

ShadesOfMe- This is off your topic, but did you used to watch De Grassi High?! Wow! I'd forgotten all about that show. I watched the re-runs in the early '90's. I think there were some kids who were bullied for having some issues including one girl w/an eating disorder. Again, I apologize for being off topic, but I had to ask. :)

People being as*holes is the main reason I don't stay long here. I believe that Alex should ban people who post personal attacks, which happens with surprising frequency here. For instance, the link that Shadesofme provided - IMO the person who wrote that post should be banned. People come here in part to get support (I know Alex disagrees with me on this one) and to be personally attacked by a stranger can be very painful.

I had a bit of a rough beginning at WP, where I got straight into a pre-existing big arguement because I defended someone who I felt was being unfairly harrassed. The arguement in question went on for a little while and I almost decided to leave WP there and then - in my first week or so.

It took some time but I had to adjust my thinking to understand the perspectives of the other party. I haven't seen too many people on WP being "as*holes". Most of the time, they're simply trying to get their point of view across but are going about it the wrong way.

Banning people for making mistakes is a bit final. Sure, you want people to learn their lesson - and perhaps a "freeze" on their account for a little while could help but ultimately banning them won't help them to apologise.

I disagree SO strongly as to be on the verge of saying something to you SOLEY for you to find it offensive, so I can then laugh at you.

But I won't. It is the thought that counts, and that alone should be enough: Don't get offended.

Only if you happen to have the willpower of a wet rag.
I've been called all sorts by strangers, and even physically attacked, and I honestly don't give a toss. Don't hold it against them in the slightest. If you do, it is only because you're weak.

Excuses, excuses, meatbag. ¬_¬
It IS a violation of free speech.
You have every right to say whatever you want to me, as I do to you. If words alone hurt you then that is YOUR problem and only YOU can fix it, but I've chosen not to be harmed by them. Simple as that.
