Do you dislike large classes in University/college?
I go to San Francisco State University, and I major in Accounting, which is the worst situation if you're like me, and I HATE large classes with a flaming passion.
My smallest class has around 80 classes, my largest probably has some 300. I don't mind at all if it's just a normal classroom, because I can just blend in the scenery, kick back with my coffee and snacks, and listen to the lecture.
But my 300-student class is a waking nightmare. The classroom is WAY too small and cramped, and it's auditorium style, so the seats are literally connected to each other, and you have to scrunch your shoulders to avoid leaning on some loud, boisterous, NT stranger (not that I'd want be sprawled out on an Aspie either, LOL). It's just horrid; you're breathing each other's air, and people around you see every detail about your hair and face, they see every piece of lint on your clothing, when they talk to someone, their voice vibrates on your cheekbones..
If you have to use the bathroom, and you're in the middle of the row, people have to scrunch up in their seats while you step over them and have your ass right in their face until you get to the door...
I don't even eat or drink anything but water before that class, because I'm worried that the people next to me would smell it on my breath. Even though my hygiene is OCD pristine, I hate being in such intimate distance of a bunch of strangers.
I can just forget about focusing on the lecture, because I have NO personal space at ALL. I had a physics class like that last semester, and some guy fell asleep on my shoulder.
Half the time, a MOUTH-BREATHER has really sick, moldy morning breath, and you can feel the damp, putrid air in your face, and you have to hold your breath during the whole lecture. It seems to give me a sore throat...
Sorry about the rambling, but this just really gets to me!
I can't stand large classes - I always sit in the very front row, preferably near the edge, so I have some semblance of personal space. I went from not understanding personal space at all as a child, to needing a lot of it now. I like the anonymity, but I would give it up any day to convert my large lecture classes (only one this semester) to small classrooms.
I've found small seminars to be considerably more challenging than the large lecture courses in which discussion is rarely possible. Most of my classes are between 8 and 15 people, and the interactive discussion is highly demanding, and, as such, provides an excellent opportunity to develop discussion skills, and make inquiries that are of immense help for idea formulation and revision.
