Did anyone here actually enjoy going to school? I remember hating it every single day before I dropped out at 14. (I graduated a home school program later on.) It seems that other people actually have some good memories of their experiences. I only remember the struggles, the dyscalculia, the grades dropping and the punishments at home and the bullies at school. Maybe that is the typical AS experience in school. I am just wondering what other posters might have felt about it.

I hated it too, but not because I hated school...I hated being bullied every day.

i liked school, but thinking back its probably because i was segregated from 'normal ' kids anyhow.
back in the eighties we still had the grammar school system in the uk, whereby the top 2% IQ kids were identified at age 11 by the 11+ exam , and sent to grammar schools, most of which were single sex.
so not only did i not have to deal with different ability levels, but also no boys lol.
beacuase one grammar school served a quite large catchment area( with the same area served by lots of normal comprehensives), my friends at school all tended to live some distance apart , so it was not unusual to only see them at school.
in addition to that kids like us were expected to study/read and have different interests to most 'normal' kids, hence the segregation.
even if aspergers was widely known of at that time, i doubt it would have been picked up in that environment, and often wonder how many of my school peers would indeed be assessed as aspergers nowadays. i did have a problem with authority, but to be fair so did a lot of my peers, as we were more than bright enough to question any regulations that didnt have an obvious purpose, and i guess that hasnt changed for me.
prior to secondary school we moved around the country a lot, so i was always 'the new girl', and always quickly identified as outside the norm intellectually, plus the lack of attachments to close friends wasnt unusual in the circumstances, but i dont remember ever being bullied, even though i was always the smallest.maybe ive just always had this air of whatever it is that makes people think on first impressions that im scary( lol so im told, until they get to know me). so school for me wasnt a problem, what was a problem however was when my parents decided when i was 14 to move abroad, and due to the younger school leaving age in spain i was suddenly adrift, with no peer group, no plans for the future and no continuing education, in comparison school had been a relatively safe haven and i would have gladly gone back.

I used to love school when i was in primary school. I remember I cried once when I had a fever because I had to stay home and it was really boring.

Mixed bag for me. There are many things I loved about school, but I was bullied and isolated from most of my classmates.

What's not to love about school:

- Ignorant authorities (teachers) who had to be respected
- Bullies, destined for Macjobs, who had their few years of glory by picking on others
- Endless celebration of mediocrity
- Ass kissers and brownnosers galore
- Endless persecution of those who knew the real answers (as opposed to the textbooks)
- Soo much time wasted on lame topics.

Yeah. I had a real blast in school.

I've always had a BIG problem with authorities. They might be right but they have to earn my respect by proving themselves right first. That one goes over 'real well' with both teachers and managers.

The one thing that really ticked me off was the 'race towards the bottom'. The worse You did in school the more cool You were. How could such a thing be allowed to thrive ?

Math and physics were cool, more or less.

BTW. Hi everybody, I'm new here

I actually didn't mind school, even when I was bullied, for a long time (I was really unaware of the bullying from quite some time, oh, my old naivety), and I was actually obsessed for a while. Now I have friends but I don't love school that much. I don't know...

I like school, even though I have no friends there. The only thing I hate about school is having to do homework.
School gives me a purpose in life, and provides much needed structure.

I loved school, most of the time.

In elementary school, I could have completely done without all the teasing & bullying. But I liked most of the teachers & really liked learning. Had trouble with math & didn't really know how to study (I wish we had known about AS at the time - it probably would have saved me a lot of grief.)

Once I started band, in junior high, everything got a LOT better. I found out I was really talented in music. Gym class was the down side - I wasn't coordinated & always got picked last for teams. But music more than made up for everything. Classmates actually started to respect me (if I couldn't make friends, at least I could have their respect.) And I had my first girlfriend.

In high school, I also started to excel in math & English. I even became a bit more coordinated & wasn't totally ridiculed in gym class.

University was the absolute best. It was all about academic achievement. I don't think I've ever been happier.

I will say it depend mostly at what grade. I propably dind't like it as I never understood how there is some kids who are happy to return to school after summer. :? After all, the freedom of activities and playing during vacations is much more fun. :D
I had struggle academicaly during much elementary school, but I was only being bullied in 5th grade. (A rough year. :( ) My difficulties had me repeated the 6th grade. The repeated year was really great though. Even though I obviously learned things, I only occasionnaly had the feeling that I was learning.
I got more of the feeling of learning after elementary school, and 8th grade history has so MUCH FUN!! ! 8) But the bulliyng came back. :(
I always hated homework. They gotten in the way of playing.

Oh and, welcome to wrongplanet johnjay. :D
