I know there are a ton of similar threads already, but I'm getting pretty frustrated. I'm currently taking a Sociology class in my college and we are required to write a research paper as our final grade. We have to have 12 references and I chose Asperger's as my topic since I thought It'd be easy to find the research on it. I've been looking for a week now and I haven't been able too find anything that meets the teacher's requirements. any online references have to com from a .org, .gov, or .edu website, and be less then 5 years old. and any books have to be similarly recent and be written by a Ph. D. or MD. I have a couple of books of my own, but they're from my childhood so they're 10 years older or more. I'm not the best researcher, but does anyone know of any articles or recent books that would be good for references?

Try searching for Atwood or Grandin. I don't know what kind of research sociology entails. Also, just try searching "Asperger*" (asterisk isn't a typo) as a keyword into your school library's search engine. Try under articles, or books, or both. It's better to start simple, I think. Try neurodevelopment or neuro deveolopment or neurological development. There are a lot of co-morbids with AS and you might want to look into those, too, OCD, Torette's, ADHD, and the like. Again, neuro development. Hope this helps!

Try the ISI web of Science or a related academic search engine, it might give you some good suggestions

Diagnosed under the DSM5 rules with autism spectrum disorder, under DSM4 psychologist said would have been AS (299.80) but I suspect that I am somewhere between 299.80 and 299.00 (Autism) under DSM4.

There is an article on the Combatting Autism Act on the White House website. If you have a university library, try JSTOR or the library catalogue - if you get stuck ask the library staff, thats what they are there for. It shouldn't be too hard to find stuff, the essay I am currently doing I have more than 12 references on AS and so on in.

These might be some good review articles for you. I'd recommend requesting them through your library if they don't already have the subscriptions. Interlibrary loan will be able to get them for you fairly quickly I'd imagine (within a couple days).

1. Neurobiology/Evolutionary Theory: http://nro.sagepub.com/cgi/content/abstract/14/1/101

2. Neurobiology: http://archneur.highwire.org/cgi/conten ... t/64/7/945

3. Cognitive: http://www.springerlink.com/content/25742773441j3085/

4. Neurobiology/Cognitive: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2518049/

5. Immune System: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19431079

6. Endocrine: http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/a ... 0/5749/819

Those are some of the reviews I could think of off the top of my head, although for the immune system review, there's actually an older one by Ashwood from 2002 that I'd prefer to recommend to you-- however, since your professor requires it to be within the last 5 years that obviously doesn't meet the requirement.

If you have any questions about those reviews, I'm pretty familiar with them, some more than others, so if you have any questions I can try to answer them-- or at the very least point you in the right direction to find out.

Hope those are helpful.

Thanks very much for the replies. I actually managed after some searching to get my hands on books by both Tony Attwood and Temple Grandin, which I'm pretty excited about. all the articles look really useful. I'm just finishing up my bibliography now. It's due in the morning.

That five-year stipulation by your professor was pretty silly btw. There are some very important works in the field of autism research that are older than 5 years, especially if you're citing the original manuscript-- which is always preferred in publishing. :?

I know. even the DSM-IV according to one of my books is older than that, I'll still use it though. she doesn't look into things THAT deep.
