Have any of you asked to have an accommodation written into an IEP or 504 stating you have to be forewarned about fire drills and be allowed to leave the building prior to a drill? I did that for my son from middle school on through high school and it helped relieve a lot of anxiety for him.

Funny thing is, he still hates the sound of fire alarms but is currently enrolled in college as a Fire Science major and is thinking about becoming a sprinkler fitter or fire protection engineer at some point. He has a huge collection of fire alarms, bells and sprinklers. Go figure! ;-)

I'm an NT and I also *hated* fire drills. And so did about 1/4 of the students, who indeed held their ears whilst walking past the bells in the hallway.

Just think, if it really *was* a dangerous fire, you'd NEED to be jolted the hell out of there. Or you're toast.

(sorry, tasteless joke. )

Those fire alarms must have been very loud. Back in middle school, I covered my ears during fire drills until I got out of the building due to my hypersensitive hearing. I coped a little better with the fire alarms in high school. The fire alarms at the college I go to are more tolerable since they are not as loud and the lights flash for several seconds before the blasts start.

I loath fire drills. We have fire drills once a week at my school, and it's horrible. The sound is like a screeching animal. It makes me want to crawl into a ball and just shut down until it's over

That's the way the fire alarms sounded at my middle school and high school (except for the alarms in the main building).

I sometimes go out with a guy who services fire alarms (togive me some experience within the electrical trade). try hearing the alarms for quite a few hours each day for weeks at a time. now i just love the sound of the alarms
