I'm British and it's just before mock AS exams. This year has been rather hellish. I found GCSEs very easy and did no work and got all As and A*s (except for a B in Drama) but this year I don't seem to be able to do anything.

I'm doing History, Psychology, Biology and English Language and while I enjoy the subjects to an extent (except History, which is incredibly boring), I'm not doing well in any of them and I find it hard to revise. So, probably I'm just lazy. But I don't even want to work on these subjects!

What I'm wondering is... is it better to do my A levels and potentially get bad results, or give up altogether and focus on what I want to do? I'd rather be doing something related to web design, graphic design or C/C++ programming, or even 3D graphics (which I know is difficult and, from previous experience, not something I'm great at). My school is utterly computer incompetent; my IT teacher shows off websites he's made for clients and they're awful, and while there is an animation club (Flash and gifs) it's full of year 7s and nothing I don't already know how to do. I have been able to do very basic C/C++ since I was a little kid. Basically I know that I have the necessary skills to set up a low level web design company right now if I wanted or needed to.

But that's probably not the RIGHT thing to do.

So, uh, advice? Or at least reassurance that uni is less awful than this, or something.

Do your AS and see what the results are. I usually think I`m cr*p then get an A.
I left school at 16 and then eventually went to evening classes and found that the things I enjoyed were not what I was being pushed into at school.
If you are in a 6th form is there a College nearby that has a better choice you would like more? Also sometimes College has a better social structure eg students treated like people not `children who must obey`.
Whatever you do don`t give up on education/training too soon as it is hard to catch up later.

I would possibly have looked for a college before I started this year had I known how crap it would be, but now that I'm basically half-way to finishing the whole mess of high school, I feel like it's either finish with what I have or stop altogether. Restarting and doing different subjects seems pointless now, as when (if) I go to Uni I'll have different subjects anyway.

My school itself is pretty good and I have friends there (not "best" friends, but still), and I have teachers that I like, so again that puts me off restarting at a college or different school.

I definitely will take the advice to finish my AS levels first... also did you find it difficult to get jobs etc after leaving school? That's one of my main concerns, that I won't be able to earn anything to support myself.

Just think, it could be worse. You could be Muslim, or live in Africa, or both.

While I have no idea what A levels are or 6th Form or anything involving the British school system, I do know that unless you have a tenacious streak in you, willing to live on hard work and a budget, then dropping out of school is a bad idea. If you are really close to being done, I would just finish.

As a female Muslim you'd be a second-class citizen and as an African you might be starved by warlords or gang-raped.

Oh, shi... I forgot it's not PC to acknowledge these realities! Sorry Alex, I'll keep it on the DL.

Hi

I to am british I got kicked out of school before my GCSE's , I was in pretty much the same situation as you arer at school only the IT teacher was allright but I was getting low grades,
2 thoughts for you
1,It night not be that your lazy perhps your Aperger's is getting in the way I found it hard to be orgnaised too I have addtional disbaillities too but my AS came in to play, if you to do your A levels then you should sit down with somone and look at what you find hard is it just revising for example and which bit of revising is hard is it sitting down to do it or is it remebering the infomation .
2. College would enable you to study what you want and still get to uni you could do a National Diploma for IT prcationares (software devlopemnt/engineering). Which would enable you to take your programming further and do webdesign,
So my avise is either take option 1 and go through everything with somone or hold out until the end of the year and start college in september youll also find the support is better and non intrusive its not like school at all

You could also start a business part time doing programming and web design, £D design isnt always really complicated just depdens upion the teacher Ive used 3D max Its wheather you are intrested enought to learn

Hop.
