drop out or stay in
i want to get peoples opinions, I am very very high on the spectrum, almost to the point where aspergers is non-existant. But thats only when it comes to social interaction, i still think and feel like someone who has aspergers. There are both amazing benefits and downfalls to that. Anyway, i want to know if anyone else has trouble with traditional education. im going to college for web devolopment at a 2 year school and i cannot pay attention at all.Not because im not on medication. Even if i was i still wouldnt pay attention because I dont WANT to. i cant understand the way the instructor is explaining stuff like c# programming, logical programming steps and etc.But yet, i look up guides for html and ccs and all that and i understand it completely with the internet. I also heard that you dont even need a degree for web devolopment if you have the skills. Is this common for aspies? are traditional education methods effective for most aspies? Albert einstein was suspected to have aspergers and he did terrible in school. And should i drop out or should i continue to waste money to BARELY pass just for a piece of paper. Sorry if im going all over the place im not used to posting in forums haha
Hey, I'm pretty similar to you. I zone out in class and struggle to pay attention unless the professor is very engaging or provides information that stimulates (aka challenging) my brain.
One thing to realize is that the people that do well without degrees make up for that in other ways. They're great interviewers and charismatic. They have personal projects and have plenty of professional referrals. They're also relentless and never give up on finding jobs. You should aspire to be like this, but realize that in society not having a degree will put you behind, so these people make up for it with these qualities.
Most, if not all schools, have a disability center. See if you qualify to have someone take notes for you. When you finish an assignment confirm your answers with the people sitting next to you. If you don't have the answer, ask them how they got it. If they don't have it, but you do, explain your answer. These will help you learn.
I'm majoring in computer science and trust me I've gone through everything and more that you have. Focus on doing well in your classes and in your spare time try to do some fun web dev projects. Make a portfolio and you'll be way way ahead of everyone else.
You might also consider a bootcamp. Bootcamps are popular for web devs, but make sure they are reputable. An associates in CS along with a bootcamp might not be bad if you don't have the patience for a 4 year degree. Although a B.S. in Computer Science would be the best of the best if you want to go into web dev due to the job mobility it offers.
PM me if you have any questions, good luck!
DON'T DROP OUT. That piece of paper is your ticket to a better lifestyle. People make more money with a college degree than people who have only a high school degree. If you do not want to go to college learn a trade, such as in fixing cars for car companies like Ford or General Motors.
