I was tested to be in the 99th percentile (just like my mum) but nobody would tell me my IQ because they said I would go around thinking I was better than everyone else (what a lie, hah!).

In school, I was usually actively discouraged from doing higher level work so became somewhat disengaged and coasted along without studying much for years (this was fine with all but my two worst subjects, especially calculus maths in High School which I failed dismally).

So, all these years later, I still don't know. A cousin is a certified genius and I suspect I would have an IQ in the gifted or highly gifted range. There were no special classes for gifted children when I was going through the school system and in Australia, we have this tall poppy syndrome where those who excel are often taken down a peg or two by the less able and jealous people.

It's a bit of a contradictory thing: all the emphasis on getting good marks at school but not so good that you leave everybody far behind.

I don't know what test they gave you, but it must have had a very large standard deviation value for 147 to not fall in the top 2%. I know for the Wechsler tests, which are among the most popular, the top 2% is around 132 or 134.

My verbal IQ as tested by the WISC-III (Wechsler Intelligence Test for Children) was actually 147, which was in the 99.9th percentile.

I get loads of different results... but they're all in the 140-range. The last one I got was 142, the one before that, 144.

Not bad, eh?

I've read that an IQ of 130 or higher is required to join Mensa. The Wikipedia article mentions 132.

It depends on what IQ test you take. Mensa's requirement is, I believe, that you score in the 99.8 or higher percentile on any IQ that is approved by them. Most of them it's 130-135+.

I have always been told that I seemed rather smart.. I haven't taken an IQ test recently but I always get comments from people like "wow how are you so smart?" or "were you like the smartest kid in your class?" I always just looked at them funny cause I never knew what the big deal was... everything I say seems normal to me lol. I actually did pretty bad in highschool but that is mainly because I never felt like doing the work and I always procrastinate. I am doing much better in college and I think that is because it is more relaxed since I only have each class like 2 times a week.

IQ between 3 and 4 standard deviations above the norm (one standard deviation=15 points on Stanford-Binet and similar). The requirement for MENSA is a measly 2 SDs above the norm (130 on Weschler, meaning 98th percentile). Remember, by the way Asperger's is defined (diagnostic criteria include normal or exceptional intelligence) Aspies are statistically smarter than NTs, as our minimum is their average. Online IQ tests are funny, I once took the same test twice, putting in the same answers both times. The first time it gave me a score of 150+, the other time it gave me a score in the mid 120s. I'm pretty sure these online tests just operate on a random number generator.

I remember having to take these stupid tests over and over and over again because we were getting 'abnormal' results... I heard a few teachers talking later that my IQ was past 180... I don't know if it's true or not but I certainly don't feel all that bright.
People always say things like 'well if your so smart why didn't you achieve more in highschool?'
or 'you make high testscores but you never do your homework, why is that?'
Maybe it's that public schools are not designed with us in mind?
Maybe I just didn't give a f**k in highschool?
Then again, who really does know...

I am 29 years old and never did above average in school, only in elementary school some things did not go the normal well. During counselling and therapy it was discovered I had acquired kind of a "not being normal"- phobia in school, so that I would have built up an inner barrier when doing maths and similiar stuff. I even had serious math issues when going to study computer sciences at university and was told I would be unable to succesfully study natural sciences at all. I did not even consider studying computer sciences in the first place but have choosen legal law instead. Terrible mistake.

That was 5 years ago. I had more counselling and therapy and maths is totally different today. I have got an MS degree in computer sciences and are offered a PhD position at the AI research center I work at for 2 years. I regularly hear I would do things nobody else would even have thought about or that I would use something in a special way.

So please, do not worry about lacking stellar sucess in school being of any meaning. It most certainly is not. Fitting in and complying to the teachers' templates is everything in school. AFAIK nobody with AS can do that trick very well.

I to be quite honest do not know my actual IQ, I took a test and it was 117, I was about 9-10 then, I'm 14 now so i don't know what it is, also has anyone noticed that the popular yet incompetent people are in high sets, but i'm in low ones and I know at least three times what they do, yet I have a slight, problem, I can only use my full brain on challenging work or in a rather interestion conversation with an intelligent person, I kind of sink to a low level otherwise.......

I doubt the accuracy of IQ tests at both extremes. They are supposed to work well around the average region but loose accuracy when hitting a ceiling. I am sure sure testing special abilities is much more difficult than finding deviations from the center spot..

I'm denied an IQ test. I really wish I could take one to prove people I'm a dunce - people think I'm highly gifted, that's terrible, even my mother recently admitted she's certain on that. The only test I was allowed to take was one for children up to age 16/17 when I just got 19 to prove to me that I'm not stupid. Since that was a kid's test and everybody would score high on that I made a point by ignoring it.

I thought I would get like 150, but the tests I did in NeuroSciencewas just memorizing words that I couldn't do very efficiently.

My score was like 94-104 and this thread is making me feel dumb. Very Very dumb.

What is with all the above 150's? What IQ test did you take? I am rather good at numbers.

I get that a lot, but it doesn't change the fact that I'm horrible at schoolwork and that my teachers can't understand whatever I write in Klausuren. Those who claim I'm smart, mostly friends and family, have high expectations of me. That's why I want to proof that I'm not smart; to stop everybody from saying that I just do bad on purpose. It's horrible having to listen to this.
