Hey, I am in college and recently figuring out that I have AS. Still trying to get a diagnosis, which is proving difficult since I am NOT a child. (Why is that anyway?) I noticed that totally have issues with space and routine..ie. I sit in the same seat in all my classes and kinda freak if someone else sits in "my" seat. It throws off my concentration, I can't focus, I get mad as hell, today I threw a 15 minute
crying fit and had to leave the room twice. My friends are all like just move..they don't get it. Does anyone else have this problem or had this problem? It's frustrating and embarrassing<

HI,

yeah i have the same problem.
i have to show up one hour befor class just to make sure that i am oreinted to the classroom and prepared for all the humans.
its the only thing that helps.
sometimes if i have errands to run i will put my jacket on the seat so that i can go out.

i have even explained to people that i have a disability and asked them to move.

the school is suppose to be accessible to us, so do what you have to do to stay focused in class.

Last year someone deliberately sat in my seat in math to bother me. I ended up threatening this person with bodily harm if they did not return my seat. Happily, they ceded it to me and I was able to resume my day, although not without a fairly high stress-level.

No, I can't tolerate it if someone takes my seat unless the entire class is being moved around because we have a seating chart (I'm in high school at the moment). I always sit in the same general area, usually in front or second row and towards the edge of the room. The edge bit is more important than the front row bit to me, so if the only seats left in class are in the middle I will take a seat on the edge in order to feel more comfortable. It makes me very upset if I end up having to sit in the back or near the middle, since in the case of the former I cannot see the board and hear the teacher well (I have quite poor listening comprehension and am nearsighted) and in the case of the latter I am very uncomfortable.

You can get a diagnosis in college- I did. If you get referred to the academic services center at your college (or refer yourself if you can), then they might send you to a neuropsychologist for testing to determine if a diagnosis fits and what academic accommodations would help. The neuropsychologist to whom I was referred was very willing to make a diagnosis even though I am not a child because in doing so she believed that she could help me by recommending accommodations.

I always sit at or near the front, and always have. I don't freak out if someone's in my seat, but can't concentrate and it's a relief when the class ends because I don't have to sit in the wrong seat any more. I annoyed my friend a few times by insisting we swap when she accidentally sat in my seat, but she's learned now :P

I usually like to sit up front, but I also like to be isolated from other people. I just don't like sitting in the middle of a big group of people. Bodily noises (i.e. sniffing, breathing, coughing) bother me.

I can't really cope with anyone beside me (between me and the edge of the row) or infront of me. One time I got moved back and got so panicked I did a runner.

I liked being seperated from the other students as best I could, unless I happened to have a friend in that class. I also liked sitting in the same seat if at all possible, and hated it when a new seating plan was drawn up.

Yeh, sort of. My problem is oh-let's-change-the-seating-plan and I find out after I've turned up.

I prefer near the wall and in the second or third row, but I don't really mind changing every once in while, so long as I sit in the same place all day.

Do any of your NT friends like to sit in your seat while you're in it? (squeezed beside you) It drives me mad!

I sit in the same place every day if I can. The odd thing is that I hate where I sit in most of my classes, and would change if I could, but I can't because...I can't.

For a moment there I thought you were NT, but then I checked your profile. Maybe you're just a lucky Aspie then.

me when i was in school i was always tryed to be placed in front but i always liked back so in case if stimming i wont be a big embarrassment plus i learned better and felt more comfortable seated next to the classroom's exit.

I prefer to be seated where I can keep an eye on everybody else. So that usually means the back.
