I've noticed that some Aspies tend to be very motivated to do their best in school, while others procrastinate a lot and just can't get into it (I lean towards the latter). There almost seems to be no middle ground with Aspies. So I'm starting this poll to see just how accurate my observations are.

Schoolwork, schoolwork, schoolwork!

I procrastinate, but I also work hard at the same time. This is my first year of college and it is much different than high school.

Homework was always a serious problem for me in middle school and high school. There is some homework, but I don't have to do it because it isn't graded. But I do the homework because I need to know the material for exams.

There is an emphasis on self-motivation and responsibility that hasn't been there before. I have always had trouble being self-motivated. However, I really want to change that bad trait. I refuse to let myself do poorly now. I want to do well and prove to myself that I can do it.

To answer your question, mikibacsi1124, I used to not be able to get into it, but now I am turning my life around (I hope)! !!

I used to hate schoolwork and never do it, because I found it boring and meaningless. But now that I have sufficiently challenging homework on subjects I'm interested in, I willingly stay up all night to complete problem sets.

I'm kinda like Harold from Harold and Kumar - I know how to party on the inbetween times and I'm definitely not too straightlaced in a lot of senses but when it comes to school or work I'm that guy who's got all the assignments done a few days after their assigned, looks like a goody-goody workaholic, and my grades are showing that a bit as well lately.

Right now I'm just stuck in a bit of a bind because it's my senior year, I have 5 classes left (2 this semester, 3 next, mostly because the scheduling for your last few classes really sucks), and I'm .004 gradepoints below Suma Cum Laude - that means I need 5 A's or 4A's and an A- to really finish up in comfortable territory. I probably won't be taking Tax II next semester since I'm thinking the auditing course direction would be more my style (and I'm glad, that would have been my sure-fire allowance grade). At least with only 3 classes it shouldn't be anything like the past 4 semesters were where I had 5 classes packed in spring, summer, fall, I didn't even care. I was working 30 hours a week on top of that for a while, now I'm working about the same ammount of hours but I'm starting to worry a little about tuition - I can't get Stafford Plus subsidized with less than 12 credits and I'm seeing how these payment plans are eating right through my bank accounts :?

I do the assigned work. I don't enjoy it at all, but I have to do it to get my degree. I have a lot of trouble finding fun things to do here at college, so I often end up spending my free time doing homework I have plenty of time to finish. I usually take a "prop" (often my homework) with me when I go anywhere to socialize so that I can gradually become aware of the social dynamic of the given situation and try to get into it if I see a way in.

When I was in college, I was a big overachiever and put my studies first. Everyone assumed that I liked school because I did so well, but I hated it because I was so stressed out all the time. I worked two jobs and took full-time classes, and I was always burned out.

It depends on the class and the teacher. In some classes, I will work much harder than I need to and obsess over trying to be perfect in those classes, namely chemistry this year. Other classes I couldn't care less how I did. I just do the work because I'm forced to and spend all of my classtime daydreaming, pretending I'm off elsewhere. ;)

Well, actually, I have a confession to make. Chemistry is becoming more of an obsession to me rather than an actual class right now. I had a class last year that was like that, taught by the same teacher. I got way too into what we were doing for my own good. ;)

I tick all those boxes so I didn't vote. It really depends on what class, like I generally don't study enough because I can't be bothered, but for history I just ignore study completely, and maths I hate, so I avoid studying for tht as well. English I'll prepare a little but, but yeah. I don't go out I'll always give myself the opportunity to study but usually I don't do a whole lot.

These days, I work very hard. In earlier college years, I did not. Now I have several bad grades which I am having to deal with; possibly getting them off my record for medical reasons or if worse comes to worse, retake the courses.

But don't get me wrong, I still procrastinate on some things. There are times I just don't have the energy/motivation until the last minute. But I always get it done.

I was Mister Procrastination back in Middle School and High School. I was just plain depressed and didn't give a s**t. The people who were getting the A's and honors classes seemed unintelligent by my standards, and because I could see that working the system had a lot more to do with it than ability I lost interest. In 10th grade I realized I was plummeting from a B+ student to a C- student so I made a concerted effort to get my grades up (yes, including working the system when I had to).

In college things have been very different. I was on Dean's List for 3 semesters straight, and have a GPA around 3.35 (higher for just my major). The fact that there is more work that is done out of class away from huge crowds of morons, and the fact that skipping class periodically (or regularly if the professor is really bad at lecturing) is considered standard practice has helped me to stay focused.

Maybe becasue it's just my choice of degree, but I found the dire warnings that I always heard from teachers about how much one has to bust their butt out of class to pass just to be simply not true.

Yea, there have been times where I've had to work my ass off, but in general, I find that only a modest amount of effort on my part has gotten me a long way, and as long as the most I have to sacrifice is a full day here and there to write and essay or study for a test, I have found that I do just fine.

Getting myself motivated to do all this... Well, that's different. Typically if I get stuck on something other than homework, I really have to begrudgingly force myself away from that and onto homework.

Total procrastinator which at times is helpful (like I generally wont do the reading until after the class we talk about it in so I dont take notes over what Ive just heard) but generally it just sucks (like this weekend Im going to do my one weekend paper stradegy should be fun.)

I am the worst procrastinator I know, yet I cannot remember ever being late to turn in an assignment that I actually knew about. To this day, I have no idea how that is.

That reminds me--I should finish my computer science lab thingy before I set myself up for irreversible damage resulting from sleep deprivation!
