I have problem with english, espesially writing essays. My problem with essays is thinking of what to say not how to write it (as you can see with my short posts). Does anyone else have english problems?

Hey Mic :D

Are you good with numbers, mathematics, or building things? We can't all be good at everything, you know! Some people with AS are more capable with their hands or with numbers than they may be with language {english}.

Take Care Mate

Do I have problems with English? Not really, except that I hate writing essays!

My English is fine: I'm a native speaker! Anyway, no, I do not have problems figuring out what to write next; it just flows. Actually, writing is one of my strengths. I do agree, though, that essays, especially when research is involved, are less interesting to write than more creative undertakings.

A good way to write an essay is to outline it first: think up a bunch of ideas and write them down. Then expand each of those ideas into paragraphs. State each idea as the first sentence of a paragraph, and use the rest of the paragraph to explain the idea. Write an introductory paragraph to explain broadly what you are going to talk about, and a concluding one to sum things up.

That approach is a good way to get started at least. It's hard to write an essay just by writing sentence after sentence. And if you think and write in paragraphs, your essay will have structure, which will make it easier to understand and read.

Also, consider a few other things as you think of those:

  • Who will be reading the essay? What is the intended audience?
  • What is your main point or thesis? What examples make that true?

For me the biggest problem I've had with the english language has been butchering words really bad. For instance, kevlar, the material they use to make bullet proof vests, I use to pronounce it kell-var until someone pointed out my error. In fact I'll do that with a lot of words.

I'm excellent with English. Since I read constantly, I have a very large vocabulary (including a large collection of word roots) and an encyclopedic knowledge of grammar. I'm also a Latin student, which further improved my vocabulary and grammatical prowess. When it comes to essays, my one fault is that I tend to take a too-informal tone (I have a hard time moderating my tones to suit various situations). Once I get started writing them, my style becomes very analytical and well-laid out. This is probably because I generally outline my essays before I write them, in my head if I don't have time to do it on paper.

I actually like writing essays more than I like writing stories, because I can't make up an interesting story to save my life. I am good enough at writing to be a very good editor or beta (I'm currently helping to beta several stories written by friends), but I don't seem to have the creative spark to create something of my own.

Like Scoots, my main problem with spoken English is a tendancy to mispronounce words, since I learn most of my vocabulary from books.

Vous avez beaucoups de problems avec le francais.

Anyway, I also have trouble filling up space in essays, posts, and conversations. Some people are good at filling space with BS, others aren't.

I used to, but don't have to anymore.

Uni essays about facts was ok. English/Lit essays I hated. Esp. if I had to tie themes from different books together.

I have trouble writing stories and things like that. I tend to write like a lawyer, very literal, and using big words (things like hereby, therefor, whereby, accordingly, etc etc). This helped me out a bit in legal studies class, but in English it can be a burden, where you're expected to express deep thoughts. I'm more technically minded is what my problem is.

I sometimes have trouble reading stories, but I can read legal documents as if I have formal legal training.

Are these the kind of problems you have?

I do the same thing. Router I always pronounced R-oww-ter, when it is supposed to be pronounced roo-ter. Or Asperger's, I pronounced Ass-per-jers instead of Ass-per-gers. My writing is fairly good though.
