Library Science is basically preparation to become a librarian.

So, what's so difficult about being a librarian that it requires study after high school that isn't traineeship/apprenticeship? Is there something behind the scenes that you don't see when you're just at the library to read?

It doesn't, really. But which applicant to a job looks better:

"I just graduated highschool, and I love books."

"I love books and the prospect of being a librarian so much that I spent four years of my life studying to be the best damn one I can be. And guess what, this means you don't have to waste man-hours training me on everything."

And a degree in Library Science is a hell of a lot more impressive than some degrees out there I've seen.

It does sound rather impressive, just something about the the phrase makes it sound good. What does the course consist of?

I was a neuroscience major and a history minor. I hope to go to grad school to get my Ph.D in neuroscience. And yes, I think it is critical for Aspies to teach themselves all they want to know about a special interest, whether it be going ahead in a favorite school subject or just researching it on their own. I've done both. I have a strong special interest in the Spanish language, and when I was in high school, our language classes were painfully slow. So, in my fourth year of Spanish, I asked for permission to go ahead, and I virtually taught myself 3/4 of the Spanish language in six months. I would not be fluent without having taught myself. And, of course, I have researched countless special interest topics on the Internet and read books about them just for my own personal knowledge. Not counting the in-depth neuroscience aspects/hypotheses that I delved into in college, I became an expert on bipolar disorder and other neuropsychiatric disorders (while I was in high school), just because they deeply fascinated me. And this particular special interest is what I hope to make my future career out of.

I got my degree in anthropology (focus was in bioanthropology). Currently working on my master's in behavior analysis.

Simple questions. Did you continue education past HS? What did you study?
And more AS-related, do you think it's important for those of us w/ AS to pursue our education as much as possible, relative to others?

Absolutely. Education has been the best way for me to advance socially and economically, especially when you've got nothing else going for you. There's a cliché that says, "It's not what you know, it's who you know." That's a flat-out lie. Knowing an investment banker at Goldman Sachs won't help you if you can't even answer phones. It's all about presenting oneself.

I am majoring in a political science/economics degree, and want to enter communications. The degree is helpful because I learn about relationships between data. That's a useful skill, especially in today's world of too much information.

That's another advantage Aspies have over people, is that we are good at processing information. We may not instantly see relationships between information, but knowing what to know (and what not to know) is half the battle.

a few months after graduating I went to a 4 year college for computer science and couldnt concentrate, couldnt get homework done and eventually failed. About a year later I went to a tech school and got my associates degree in automotive technology. I was interested in that for awhile but Ive never actually had a job working on cars. Ive never even done anything that would require my degree. I start back to school in a week for massage therapy. For me to learn I have to be doing what I'm learning.

I have a question.

Why did you pay to go to school for automotive tech if you are not going to do work as a mechanic?

The ROI on such a proposition seams like it would be prohibitive.

But I can kind of see where you are coming from as I would like to go to culinary school to learn the techniques but would not want to work as a chef.

Maybe some day I will be financially secure enough to be able to afford to dedicate the time and cost to learn everything I have ever wanted to. But I would need lots of cash, tons of time and supreme perseverance as with me it is like a new special interest every fortnight and I have 27 years worth of catching up to do. :) lol

My parents helped me out and paid for school the first two times I went. I'm not so lucky this time, I got about half of it paid with grants and the rest with student loans.

Journalism is starting to sound more appealing to me. That and political science.
