If you have your GED, you may prefer to take a year or so of courses at a community college before transferring to university. It looks better for transfer, plus you can get many of your general education credits out of the way cheaply. Just make sure you have a university in mind and check beforehand that the courses you take at CC will transfer. (Don't just assume they do, even if they have courses with the same name at both campuses.)

Your general education classes are going to be the same regardless of what major you choose, so you don't have to move out of your parents' place yet.

And once you start all that, as someone who is currently in research and has a background in Psych, I highly recommend doing a minor in Biology. (I can't express how highly I recommend this.) Many psych programs are more like liberal arts education: there's loads of people wanting to go into different fields, like Business, who major in Psych. And so many bachelors psychology programs are not good preparation for graduate studies. A considerable amount of Neuroscience research has a biologic underpinning nowadays, and getting a minor in Bio will only open up MORE doors for you. It's one of the things I truly regret not having done in my undergrad career, it would've made things much easier and given me a better foundation.

Psychology is the no. 1 most popular degree because it's the easiest. There are few "laws" about what qualifies people to go into practice as counselors, therapists, etc. so you can set up an office and advertise for clients right out of school. It's kind of sleazy, but you can make money fast and set your hours.
