Congrats to your daughter as well!

Strangely, I haven't been getting checks and gifts in the mail, as all my non-parent relatives are in China. I got a laptop back in December, and I got a graphics tablet a few weeks ago (and I'm loving it!).
Yep, I thought I was done, but then... DEADLINES! WOOT! I actually missed a deadline to register for an essay test, but it turns out I was exempt from that test because of my high school test scores. Even registering for MIT is hard!
We're keeping my diploma in a safe place instead of framing it because 1) it was obvious that I'd at least graduate and 2) it's small and came in a fancy book-like case anyways. We did, however, frame my acceptance letter from MIT.

Holy crap you're going to MIT!?!?!?!?! CONGRATULATIONS!! !! !! !! !! !!

My daughter is going to a community college and majoring in culinary arts. She is going to go there for two years and then take other courses to also get a degree in pastry arts.

Woah, MIT. Serious congrats and props on that for real!! !

As for the checks and stuff, did you send your relatives in China an invitation to your graduation? Thats why my daughter got the checks. She sent them to all the relatives. Then again, thats the custom here, at least in the South and in our family. An invitation to something that you can't go to, like a wedding, a shower, a graduation, etc is really just to let you know so you can send a gift or at least a card. Some just sent cards and that's ok too. She's put them all up in her room. Is that a common custom in China to send a gift or a card or something when someone sends you an invitation to something they know you can't come to? It sounds like it's pushing for gifts, but it's not. You put a calling card with your name on it, and a photo inside the invitation and the person you sent it to puts the whole thing in their photo album. We have lots of those in an album I have just for invitations to weddings and graduations and also funeral cards and obituaries.

MIT. Wow. I'm seriously impressed. I'm happy with her choice though, and she's happy with it. One thing about her major, we can eat all the homework and all the practice projects! Try that with sicence ;-)

Serious props to you!

 Thanks, although I couldn't have done it without my parents' daily helping and nagging.
Actually, my parents and I are living in the U.S., and there is almost no way that any of my relatives will be coming over from China to visit. My cousin and aunt will be visiting in July, though. :D
Culinary arts sounds exciting! Yeah, it's a rare treat to be able to literally taste your progress. You can't do that with science, unless you want to get killed!

Great job! Is MIT far from where you live? Are you going to live in a dorm? My college is all the way across the country from my house, so I had to live in the dorm. I found living there to be difficult but also a lot of fun. I was in a dorm specifically for freshman engineering students, so I met many people who shared my career interests as well as my personal interests. I'm sure at MIT you will be surrounded by smart people as well.

Yeah, I'll be living in a dorm. The good thing about MIT is, there are no specified "freshman dorms" or anything, so people of all years are mixed together in a dorm, even on a floor of the dorm, so that freshmen can get help more easily from people who know what they're talking about. :D
