I hated being in team sports in general, but did i like being in solitary positions in the team.

I liked being the goal keeper in soccer, because i could be alone, but still be in the team.

I enjoyed practicing my goal keeping skills in soccer, and was ok at it, i like soccer.

I didn't like any team sport where i couldn't be alone, and that was most of them.

I was awfully bad at PE until I was sixteen. At that age I started to really care about being fit, started exercising and joined the volleyball team plus playing football (soccer) frequently with my friends. Although I was still the second-worst volleyball player of the team, I was at least better than everyone that wasn't part of it, plus that one guy who was. Also, like MannyBoo, I played a lot as goalkeeper, and after several months I was the best goalkeeper of my group of friends.

I hated PE when I was a kid, mostly because I really sucked (I think my coordination falls somewhere in the 2nd percentile) and I didn't like any of the games we played, so I understand what you're going through. Cheer up though, none of it will be all that necessary later in life.

Work out on a consistent basis if you're that concerned. Sure, you'll suck when you start. But with consistency you will get better.

I wouldnt say its hopeless, but I accept to have physical disabilities. So its not as if I couldnt leanr anything, but its simply a bit harder. As example, as a child I visited, additional to our normal school gym, our school basektball team. When I started school with 10 years, I was among the worst basektball players in my normal gym class. After visiting 4 years the schools basektball teams I was still one of the worst players in the school basketball team, but an average basketball player among my normal gym class. (While the other girls that played 4 years in school basketball team were among the top players, when the played with their normal gym classes.)

So clearly there has been an progress at my skills, and luckily our school never was into competitions, so it was only about playing for fun. It was just a bit harder for me then for others. So if my childs will have the same probs as I had, I´d see to take the same solution: See that they have a bit more of sport (I also had been once a week in an extra gymclass.), as long as they can concentrate on simply having fun, without any competition.

Luckily our normal gym teacher had a pretty simple grade system. (We have 1-5 with 1 as the best grade you can get.)

Good at sport and being motivated? - 1
Bad at sport and motivated? - 2
Showing no motivation at all? - 3

Other grades didnt exist for her. I think that really helped having fun in her lessons. :) As long as you really tried to give your best, everything was ok for her. :)

Seriously, man? I'd like you to point out exactly where I was "whining" about my poor physical fitness skills. All I did was make a self-deprecating joke about my poor coordination. THat doesn't make me a whiny couch potato, in fact, I'm really into long distance running, even if I suck as sports like soccer or basketball. And, to be honest, although physical fitness is necessary for some jobs, it's not a prerequisite for success, and other talents are just as important. You need to take a chill pill.

I was never any good at PE. I put up with it, because it was a chance to get out of the classroom and have some exercise. My dad has always been drumming it into me how important exercise is, and now that I don't have school PE I go running (it's the sport which requires almost zero coordination, and has a minimal social element -- passing strangers going the opposite way and overtaking people).

I think team ball sport will always be an NT thing. To be good at team ball sports, you need intelligence (AS: ding!) physical coordination (AS: ERRR!), acute understanding of others' body language (AS: ERRRR!), be comfortable coming into physical contact with strangers (AS: ERRR!).

You can learn coordination slowly, though. I learnt some basic hand-eye coordination by throwing and catching a ball with someome hundreds and hundreds of times.

Okay, you are way out of line here. No one here is whining about being bad at physical fitness, as in, working out. Most are complaining about being forced to participate in competitive sports, which, for many Autistic people, can lead to bullying and humiliation from classmates due to their balance and/or coordination problems. This is a very sensitive issue, so please actually try to read through threads in future, and if you have nothing nice to say, you'd do well to shut the f**k up.

I wasn't brilliant at PE. I was no good at running and had little hand-eye co-ordination. I could barely even throw or dribble a ball. Saying that, I did enjoy quite a bit of it at high school, having decent teachers. I even enjoyed some of the team games we did, and we got to do quite a range of things, considering. Trampolining was the best, and I was once told I had good control on the trampoline! :D

I enjoy doing PE at school, but I am very bad at it. This is mainly down to the fact that I am not very fit! My motor skill problems don't help, either. My hand-eye coordination is terrible, making me fail in sports like hockey and football (or soccer. I'm a Brit.) Despite this, I don't really get frustrated.
The girls in my group are nice, and my teacher is friendly, so if ever I get confused when playing a game, I feel comfortable asking for help.

I'm another person who hated it. I'm not very comfortable with competition and once you combine that with my lack of interest in most sports and my lack of athleticism and coordination, it made for an unpleasant experience. I felt like I was under constant scrutiny in that class.

I had many of the problems already listed (physically small person, poor coordination, no desire for bodily contact, and poor ability to work with NT teammates.) This was compounded by the fact that I was three grades ahead in school. For several years, my dad drove me to the elementary or middle school with people my own age for PE and back up for other classes (it became a nightmare, as all of the schools had different schedules.)

As expected, I wasn't on the sports teams, either. I do run now, though.

I'm horrible at any sport so I know what you mean. Most people in the school I go to wouldn't understand either
