That really pisses me off. Homosexuals I think are perverts, and like any pervert they can quite their perversity, so I think referring to them in a derogatory manner is acceptable. Mentally ret*d people are forced to be the way they are.

In the past few years, how often have you heard someone use it in that sense in casual conversation? That definition of the word is a bit dated, and isn't used much any more, at least in my experience.

I've seen it used that way on the theme song to the Flintstones "we'll have a gay old time." But other than that, not unless someone is calling attention to the fact that gay used to mean happy.

Fag is another term that I'm starting to see get changed too. Recently I've heard a few girls call other girls fags.

I worked in an office last year where all the young college guys used the word constantly. I took it as homophobic. It seemed a reactionary male anxiety for fear of someone thinking they were gay. When the governor of New Jersey resigns and suddenly announces he is gay, it develops an atmosphere that becomes some McCarthy/red scare-type thing. It's part of today's culture. We're also a country at war with the new red scare -- terrorism -- so no one wants to appear soft. I actually objected and wound up an outcast, under suspicion. I really just thought it annoying and stupid.

As great as the Flinstones was, it isn't exactly the most current of television shows.

I would have to disagree. I have a homosexual friend who has said mulitiple times that he wishes he were hetrosexual, as if would be easier for him. It wasn't his choice to become gay, and he shouldn't be ridiculed for it.
As for the ret*d thing...yeah, I agree. It ticks me off too.

Edit: I'm not trying to start a fight. I just don't agree.

Just another misuse of the word. Gay used to mean happy. Fag used to mean a pile of sticks. It is annoying nonetheless.

I say "that's gay" and "that's ret*d" and not once has anyone gotten mad at me. Heck, everyone I know of agrees with me when the words are implied!

You're so right, people are too sensitive. I sometimes call people/things "gaytarded." I've never heard any complaints.

That's awesome! Maybe I should start saying that, too! :) One of my friends also says "re-re", which is short for retarted. I never caught on to that phrase though, since I think it sounds ret*d. ;)

Its not acceptable!
What if someone used the word "Aspie" in the same negative way?

Person 1: "Hey dude, I fell down the stairs today"

Person 2: "Dude! That's so Aspie!".

I for one would take that as an insult.

Also:

...Should say SOMETHING to those who use such words as something negative.

People do use Aspie in a negative way.

Who cares. Get over it.

I don't like the sound of the word "Asperger's" and "Aspie" because it sounds too much like...well, you've seen the puns.
Autism sounds much better. I would consider myself "mildly autistic."

Somewhat on topic, in high school I heard someone say that someone (not me) who was very good at video games was "Rain Man." On the other hand, I am not as socially debilitated as the "Rain Man." But it was good hear autism used as a positive label.
