SPEDS? Shouldn't we be known as sycos,at least? Why SPEDS?

I hope I can diffuse the problem a little.

SPED is short for Special Education. This does not mean that everyone in the program is "special" in the way many people perceive it. It actually just means that the education the student receives is adapted for them in some way. Maybe Adaptive Education would be a better way of saying it, but I really feel we should not put a label on it at all.

All the term means is that the student has some adaptation (low vision student sits close to front of the room, student with a colostomy bag has permission to leave room when needed, student with verbal processing problem recieves a copy of the topic discussion before class starts so he can follow along more easily, student with poor fine motor skills gets to type his work and email it to the instructor, etc...)

Not all of these students are mentally disabled, they just have some need that requires some minor (or yes, in some cases, major) adaptation during any part of the school day in order to better succeed in their education.

Does this make sense?
