i kinda dropped out a few times. i finished secondary school at "the hospital school" was a pretty fun place, i had no lessons except English & spent my time playing guitar in the hall. so i only have a Gcse in English language &literature.. B&C respectively :(
then went to college but couldn't focus.. i finished that course too & passed but i didn't continue or really feel like i learnt much. &there were soo many "normal" folk it wasn't very comfortable.

I dropped out of high school, and I hate to say it, but it was one of the better decisions I've made in my life. I wasn't very good in school to begin with, and I was teased horribly.

I did.

And for years, and years, and years I've kicked myself for doing it. At the time I was going through a very big depression for my age, and this was all around the time I was diagnosed. I dropped out in grade 8 (good God, I know.) But when I was 16, I went into a program with independent study and I worked myself up to grade 11. (They only offered up to that grade, though...) So right now I have that much to my credit, and am currently studying for my GED so I can get into university. I'm trying very hard to make up for my stupid decision now, and hope it will be enough.. :(

The idea of me dropping out if I was not as weak-minded as I was, would be ludicrous as I love learning more than anything in the world. I just wish I was stronger at the time and did not quit.. but attempting to make up for it is the best I can do now.

Is anyone else here studying for the GED test, or has done it already? I am in need of a bit of inspiration. (I thought it would be greater, even, if I had somebody to study with me.. Motivating..!)

I dropped out of HS after 10th grade. I don't regret that; it was just a bunch of busywork that wasted my time anyway, and the classes I was actually interested in were only available at community college. Community college was rougher for me; I ended up spending 8 years there, part-time and with many breaks because of discouragement and health problems. Trying to get all my classes together for the transfer process took ages and many missteps. Now I've finally transferred to a university, and the stress is so bad. I wish I could drop out today, but I'm trying to hang on to complete my last year.

Absolutely, Sketch. I dropped out of college several times because of this. Anyone who can get a BA degree with Asp. or related disorder deserves a million degrees. It is very very depressing to have to drop out . Not before I went to the school 'disability' dept. and they admitted they have nothing. Nothing, to assist. They admitted that. Awareness in colleges must occur. All their programs are for physical problems.

I unfortuantly dropped out way to soon,

My problem, i have realized as an adult, was the
people around me and the decitions i made. I never
understood fully how important it was, i was there
and just tried to fit in, the learning was secondary
in a way. I remember clearly sometimes i paid
attention and did as i was supposed to do, and i
liked it, i liked learning. But, then i looked at the
other guys around me and tried to fit in, i didnt
know at the time that was what i was doing, but
it was. Most of the other guys were noisy and
screwing around and i ended up acting like that
to not stick out :( I remember very clearly moments
at school where i was doing something stupid and
at the same time thinking "i wish i could just sit
down and learn in peace, this is just stupid".
But as soon as i tried, someone was all over me
wonmuch potential. :(
I told him i was trying, but what i was trying
was to fit in. We were talking about two
different things.

So, now i`m 30-some
with others, it was so much easier alone.

I hear ya. We are around the same age and I was the one complaining about the loud guys in school! I could have done so much better without their damn distractive noise! And I did, in college.. I was honor student in college. What you are saying about the teacher talking a foreign language due to their not understanding is true. PEOPLE ON HERE: YOU THINK IT'S BAD NOW?? YOU SHOULD HAVE WENT TO HIGH SCHOOL IN THE 80'S! It was worse, in terms of 'disabilities'. We had NO emotional support, the disability dept. was for physical disabilities only. It is so sad that people can't ' 'handle' what they fear or don't understand. To everyone I would say 'try and go to college online'. No distractions, much easier and you will excel. WORK: I HAVE WORKED AND BEEN OFFERED OVER 45 JOBS. I SEE MANY DISABLED PEOPLE ABLE TO WORK IN THE GOVERNMENT Positions without a college degree, and they are not cleaning floors, either.

I was okay in high school---although I ended up going to a smaller school halfway through my junior year.

In college I had a pattern of not liking my school and transferring after each year. I came close to dropping out of my second college and ended up on academic probation. Transferred once more to a large state school and finished out my undergrad career there.

Also had one semester where I was going part-time at two different universities, although when you combined everything I was going full-time. That was another semester where I cut it pretty close.

I dropped out of high school in my... fifth year? Sixth? Yeah, I had just started to actually work on graduating, too. I had to get a job, though, and I did. Then I lost it. I got my GED, and, after quite a long road, I'm now working on a degree and my PE credits for a high school diploma.

By the way: I knew a lot of people who dropped the Job Corps program because they claimed they couldn't cope. I know that they believed it, but that's not necessarily true. I know that, for autistics, stress tends to be a bigger problem, but it can also be an excuse.

What made it so difficult for you?

I didnt drop out in a sense I transferred to an online high school who sends work and books through the mail but now I can stay at home and not have to deal with the stress of socializing, being out of my comfort zone and the new graduation requiremens rather than credit collection. The portfolio which is to finish certain assignment given out infrequently get a certain grade on it for and have certain number of portfolio worthy assignments for each subject for each of the 4 years then present it to a commitee and if they don't approve you dont graduate. Thanks state of rhode island for high stantdards for a subpar education. My high school was already labeled a drop out factory.

I dropped out once in high school, once in community college, and twice in University. I finished high school. I am just returning to University for the 3rd time at 24 years old to complete my B.A. I have changed my major five times. When I am interested in the subjects I am taking, I do really well, and get 80s and 90's, otherwise I find school absolutely miserable and over-whelming. I have big problems with time management and organization . When I felt over-whelmed and trapped in school, I simply gave up and quit in the past. I am really hoping I will not do this again.....I really want to graduate. However, right now I am going through a hard time with motivation/attention in school again. I have an I.Q of 130 and sometimes I love school more than anything, and feel soooo stupid for not having graduated yet, and being 24, living at home, dependent on my parents financially as a full-time student . I am trying meds for A.D.H.D symptoms, I hope that will help....or that I can somehow just push through this time.

I managed to get through high school before I dropped out - trying to find my way in an uncaring university environment at sixteen, unable to conduct a conversation, finished me off though.

By the standards of the day, I sort of dropped out (certainly no one expected me to leave). But when you share so little with your classmates, intellectually and emotionally, I had no intension of hanging around.
